The management of the Interlibrary Loan and Document Access Service is centralised in the General Library, and performs its functions taking into account the Intellectual Property Legislation, as well as the Rebiun Agreements and the IFLA Procedural Guidelines. This service carries out two main tasks:
- Obtaining documents that do not exist in the BUSC collections, either in original format (usually books) or through digital reproductions.
- Providing existing documents in the BUSC collections to other libraries.
Request for documents
Before requesting any document, you should check that it does not appear in the BUSC collections by consulting the Iacobus catalogue. If the document is in the BUSC, you can request it on loan, or obtain a reproduction of it.
To use the service for the first time it is necessary to register on the form: Request for interlibrary loan and photo documentation. People not linked to the USC must register in advance by sending an application form to fotprest [at] usc.gal (fotprest[at]usc[dot]gal). Once they receive their credentials, they will be able to make requests through the form.
USC University Community (teaching and research staff, administrative and service staff, students)
- Requests for both interlibrary loans of books and reproductions of journal articles can be made through the form.
- In the case of the loan of books, once received, the BUSC will contact you so that it can be consulted at your reference library.
- The digital reproductions will be sent to your email address.
- The service is free of charge for all persons linked to the USC, provided that the cost of the request does not exceed €100 per digitised document and €50 per loan copy. If these costs are exceeded, the corresponding fees will be applied. A maximum of 100 documents per year for teaching and research staff and master's or doctoral students and 25 documents per year for administrative and services staff and degree or 4th cycle students.
People outside the University community
- Requests for both interlibrary loans of books and reproductions of journal articles can be made through the form. To use it for the first time it is necessary to make a prior request by emailing fotprest [at] usc.gal (fotprest[at]usc[dot]gal).
- In the case of book loans, once received, the BUSC will contact you so that you can consult the book at the General Library.
- Digital reproductions will be sent to your email address.
This service is subject to a fee. Persons not affiliated with the USC must pay the corresponding fees.
Restrictions
In general, interlibrary loans are not available for electronic books, old and heritage collections, reference works (dictionaries, encyclopaedias, etc.), newspapers and magazines, books in high demand at the libraries of origin, brochures, reports subject to confidentiality, theses, and any other document that may be restricted by the library that owns the collection.
In some of these cases, reproduction in digital format may be requested.
Both University Library and the libraries that provide documents to University Library may establish restrictions on the use of their collections for interlibrary loan at any time.
Interlibrary loan requests for books that are easily acquired will not be processed.
Receipt time
The time taken to receive documents varies according to the supplying centre and the type of document requested.
Renewal of the loan
In cases where the owning library allows the renewal of the interlibrary loan, you may request an extension of the time allocated to the loan by consulting the staff of your reference library (where you are consulting the document).
