María José Alonso, Professor of Biopharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and current President of the Controlled Release Society (CRS, Inc) is the new Editor-in-Chief of 'Drug Delivery and Translational Research' (DDTR), an Official Journal of the Controlled Release Society published by Springer Nature.

The USC joins other ten academic institutions that have recognized with this honor the career of this eminent scientist, Director of the Institute of Biomaterials, Drug Delivery and Regenerative Medicine of the University of Texas at Austin.

María José Alonso, the Spanish woman whose scientific publications have the greatest impact on research

Professor Alonso is number one in the h-index ranking of Spanish female researchers in the area of Health Sciences. The h-index is an indicator of the impact of research publications. Alonso also leads the h-index ranking of male/female Spanish researchers in the specific area of Pharmacology and Pharmacy.

Our latest paper, published in Journal of Drug Targeting: “Engineering polymeric nanocapsules for an efficient drainage and biodistribution in the lymphatic system”

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of particle size (≈100 versus 200 nm) and surface composition of polymeric nanocapsules (chitosan, polyarginine and carboxymethyl-β-glucan) on their ability to target specific immune cells in the lymphatics.

“A multifunctional drug nanocarrier for efficient anticancer therapy”, article dedicated to Prof. N. Peppas and Prof. R. Langer, published in Journal of Controlled Release

The nanocarrier consisting of functionalized Lyp1-hyaluronic acid nanocapsules accumulated drastically in the tumor tissue (a-37 times higher tumor accumulation than Taxotere®), a fact that was translated into a drastic decrease in tumor growth and metastatic spreading, in an orthotopic lung cancer model.
