May 8, 2019.- Professor Nicholas A. Peppas received today the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). The induction ceremony took place at the Noble Hall of the Pazo de Fonseca. The nomination of Professor Nicholas Peppas was presented by the Faculty of Pharmacy.
With this distinction, the USC joins other ten academic institutions that have recognized with this honor the career of this eminent scientist, Director of the Institute of Biomaterials, Drug Delivery and Regenerative Medicine of the University of Texas at Austin. He is also a member of 9 Academies around the world, and has received the highest recognitions of both US National Academy of Medicine and US National Academy of Engineering.
Professor Peppas’ work in biomaterials, drug delivery and nanomedicine, follows a multidisciplinary approach by blending modern molecular and cellular biology with engineering principles to design the next-generation of therapeutic agent release systems for the treatment of diabetes, cancer, autoimmune and cardiovascular diseases. In the Nicholas Peppas’ Acadamic Family Tree, more than 1,500 scientists have been benefited from his wisdom, mentorship and leadership.

Trajectory and honors
Nicholas A. Peppas serves as the Cockrell Family Regents Chaired Professor in the Departments of Chemical, Biomedical Engineering, Pediatrics, Surgery and Pharmacy, and Director of the Institute of Biomaterials, Drug Delivery and Regenerative Medicine of the University of Texas at Austin.
Professor Peppas holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of Ghent (Belgium), Parma (Italy), Athens (Greece), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Patras (Greece), National Technical University of Athens (Greece) and Honorary Professorships at Sichuan University, Peking Union Medical College, the PLA Hospital and Medical School, and Beihang University in Beijing, China.
Professor Peppas is a member of 9 Academies around the world (5 in the US). He has been the president of several scientific societies and he is currently Editor of the journal “Regenerative Biomaterials”, and Associate Editor of the journal “Science Advances”. Sc.D.
He is the only scientists to have received the highest recognitions of both National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering.
