Research Group in Mathematical Engineering

The Research Group in Mathematical Engineering (mat+i) was created in 1986 at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) under the leadership of Alfredo Bermúdez de Castro, coinciding with the creation of the Department of Applied Mathematics.

At the heart of their research is a focus on partial differential equations and numerical solution methods. Since its creation, the group has applied this knowledge to solve a wide range of industrial, social and environmental problems through projects and contracts, both publicly and privately funded, positioning itself as a reference in industrial mathematics in Spain and Europe.

The group’s involvement in these projects ranges from the initial mathematical modelling of the problem to the development of complete software solutions. This comprehensive approach includes rigorous mathematical and numerical analysis of the equations derived from the models to ensure the accuracy and reliability of their solutions, resulting in a significant scientific output. Since 2006, mat+i has been recognised by the Galician Government as one of the few competitive reference research groups.

The applications of its cross-cutting methodologies are diverse and extend to areas such as acoustics, biomedicine, energy, environment, electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, metallurgy, solid mechanics, wave propagation and more.

Its leadership has been demonstrated by its central role in the development of various platforms and networks that serve as hubs for collaboration between academia and industry such as the Technological Institute of Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI), currently the transfer unit of the through the Galician Centre for Mathematical Research and Technology (CITMAga). The group is also actively involved in the management and scientific advisory boards of various national and international scientific structures, including BCAM, CITMAga, CRM, ECMI, EU-Maths-IN, math-in and SEMA.

The funding received from the various research projects and contracts has enabled the group to carry out extensive teaching activities, including the supervision of doctoral theses within the framework of the Doctorate in Mathematical Methods and Numerical Simulation in Engineering and Applied Sciences. In 2006, the group also promoted the creation of a Master’s degree in Industrial Mathematics between the three Galician universities, the Master in Mathematical Engineering, which has been transformed (from 2013) into the Master in Industrial Mathematics (M2i), together with the Universities Carlos III University of Madrid and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. This Master’s Degree has been awarded the mention of excellence by the Galician Government since 2022.
