Background: Heavy drinking in young people has become a social and health problem. The current state of the research leaves many questions that require a systematic approach to designing appropriate prevention policies.
Objective: To determine the effect of the Heavy drinking during early adolescence-youth on 1) Alcohol use and abuse / dependence at the end of this stage; 2) social and labor at the end of this stage Integration; 3) neuropsychological functioning of neural networks more vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of alcohol and 4) Volume of gray matter in the most vulnerable regions to the neurotoxic effects alcohol.
Method: Prospective cohort study. For Objectives 1 and 2 it is analyzed 601 college from Compostela Cohort with at least 3 consumption measures alcohol. Independent variables: exposure to alcohol and other drugs and AUDIT follow up. Dependent variables: EuropASI telephone questionnaire applied. For Objectives 3 and 4 are studied 47 Exposed (at least 3 positive Heavy drinking) and Unexposed (random sample of 50 subjects with negative measures for Heavy drinking on all tracks) Independent variables: Heavy drinking and sex. Dependent variables: neurocognitive functioning (neuropsychological testing) and neuroimaging structural (volume of gray matter regions of interest). The data analyzed using generalized linear mixed models calculate the risks associated with the Heavy drinking, t-test to compare the differences in regional gray matter volume and Pearson correlations to correlate with neuropsychological measures.
