The CiQUS makes women's work visible in science

  • Several activities were scheduled to highlight the role of women in research on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

International Day of Women and Girls in Science was on Friday February 11, which was celebrated with the Scientific Musical Bio Christiane in Cidade da Cultura, and also with a several activities held at the Singular Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS). The main aim of this schedule was to give visibility to women's work in science and to be as an example for girls who want to have a career in this field.

Great reception among Galician students

Scientific Bio Musical Christiane took place in the Xosé Neira Vilas Auditorium of Cidade da Cultura. This activity was programmed with the CiMUS and the IGFAE of the USC, within the International Day of Women and Girls in Science framework, and was aimed at students of 3º and 4º ESO. It is a tribute to the figure of the scientist Christiane Dosne Pasqualini, who dedicated her life to researching the causes of leukemia and she was the first woman to be part of the National Academy of Medicine.

Same Friday morning, researchers women of  the CiQUS received students from IES Compañía de María and IES de Valga, and they could vitit the building. Deputy Director, Dolores Pérez Meirás, was the person in charge of welcoming them and researchers Ester Polo and María Tomás was been talked to them about their professional experience and tasks they currently do at the Center. Students could hear interesting talks given by researchers women from CiQUS: "Matrix from Trinity's eyes" by Rebeca G. Fandiño, "Being a scientist and surviving the attempt" by González Bello and “You are not Henrietta Swan” by María Giménez. In the afternoon, Prof. Pérez Meirás attended as a guest speaker at “Construindo un futuro en femenino: sectores emerxentes e retos pendentes”, a session  held at the Facultade de Ciencias de la Educación as part of the "Mulleres STEM do S.XXI" conference. This initiative seeks to raise awareness of the relevant role of women in the professional, business and academic world linked to STEM disciplines.

This day was mainly focused on encouraging inclusion of women in science and highlighting leading scientists women's work who will serve as inspiration for girls who want venture in the exciting world of science.
