CiQUS PhD student Ana Cajaraville Leiro has defended today her Doctoral Thesis with European Mention, entitled “Benzofused Azaheterocycles: I. New Merocyanine Derivatives of trans-Retinal and Their Artificial Bacteriorhodopsins. II. Synthesis by C-H Bond Activation Processes”. Her work has been supervised by Professors Carlos Saá Rodríguez (CiQUS researcher) y Susana López Estévez (Faculty of Chemistry).
Many organic molecules have great importance for humanity as pharmaceuticals or a number of new materials. Therefore, it is very relevant the efficient preparation and biological evaluation of these organic compounds. In this regard, the study of their biological properties and the catalysis for their preparation is a key technology for the future.
Within that context, this work has been focused on the development and implementation of new catalytic methods based on the activation of Csp2-H bonds, a part of the overall goal of his research group in sustainable chemistry based on organometallic catalysis. In this work new simple and efficient approaches to the synthesis of benzofused heterocyclic compounds with potential applications in medicine and biotechnology have been described.
