The Herbarium is a research support service of the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Innovation. It has a constantly growing scientific collection of dried plant specimens, labelled and suitably treated for their indefinite preservation.
Its main goals are to gather scientific material that is representative of plant diversity, primarily from Galicia and secondarily from other Iberian, continental or world territories. The research work ranges from the collection of complete plant samples in the field to their cataloguing and storage following an orderly botanical system, including the drying, preservation, determination, labelling and computerization of each sample.
The Herbarium is open to the scientific community in general and its sporadic activities include collaborations in 2nd and 3rd cycle teaching activities. It is also a member of the Ibero-Macaronesian Herbarium Association (AHIM) and has participated in the "Iberian Flora" and "Global Plants" projects, among others.
The contents of the herbarium collections are accessible worldwide through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and also through the department's own website.
The acronym SANT corresponds to its international registration, with which it is recognised in the world botanical community.
