Ángel García Alonso - Platelet Proteomics | |||||||
|
Current Research Projects We participate in the european project TAPAS (ITN-European Joint Doctorate) in the search for novel antitrombotics with antiplatelet activity. Our current projects focus on the study of the general proteome and signalling cascades in platelets by proteomics. Platelet secretome and microvesicles are also investigated. This is being done by a combination of proteomics and classical biochemistry and molecular biology approaches. Such studies focus on healthy individuals and patients with obesity and coronary artery disease. The aim is to investigate platelets at molecular level to identify novel biomarkers and drug targets that may help to treat / diagnose ACS and other cardiovascular diseases where unwanted platelet activation plays a role. Potential drug targets identified by proteomics are being investigated in collaboration with the Biofarma group to find small molecules that can inhibit/modulate them. Main funding is from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, the Agencia Estatal de Investigación, the Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Ordenación Universitaria and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
