CiQUS' Science Journeys ended with high participation

02/02/2016

More than 450 students of 14 Secondary Schools from different points of Galicia, as Santiago, La Coruna, Melide, Vigo, Ourense, Cambados, Ames or Santa Comba, visited the CiQUS over the past two weeks to conduct experiments in the laboratory, such as chemical synthesis of simple drug compounds, and to participate actively in various scientific demonstrations.

Also, the students took a guided tour and knew the most important researches of the center. This experience helped them to have a first contact with the daily life of a research center and to know some of the equipment and analysis techniques which CIQUS has in its instrumental laboratories.

These visits are related to the informative center strategy in its social commitment and focuses their objectives on highlighting the contributions of chemistry and to improve the quality of life, as well as stressing the importance of Scientific research and subsequent applications, like chemical investigation of biological systems and processes (biologically active compounds for new drugs), new compounds with non-conventional physical properties (optical, magnetic and/or electronic), polymeric nanomaterials with biomedical applications, novel and efficient methodologies for the synthesis of biologically active compounds as well as the use of theoretical and computational chemistry in order to solve problems related to the prediction of properties, reaction mechanisms and theoretical modelling with application in biological chemistry.
