The language chosen for writing your thesis must be authorized by the CAPD when approving the latest Research and Training Plan.
Information regarding the language of the thesis can be found in articles 35, 38 and 40 of the Doctoral Studies Regulations.
The language of the doctoral thesis
Languages allowed
The thesis may be written in:
- Galician
- Spanish
- Portuguese (due to linguistic and historical affinity with Galicia)
Other scientific/technical/artistic languages
The thesis may also be written in one of the usual languages of communication in the scientific, technical or artistic fields of the doctoral program. In this case, it will be necessary to include in the thesis:
- A summary in Galician of a minimum length of 3,000 words (also mandatory for theses written in Portuguese).
- You may add summaries in other languages as well.
Autorización pola CAPD
- The chosen language must be approved by the CAPD through the Research and Training Plan.
Evaluation guarantee
- If the thesis is not written in Galician or Spanish, the CAPD must guarantee that external evaluators and members of the board can evaluate the thesis written in that language.
Partes obrigatorias da tese na lingua seleccionada
The following sections of the thesis must be in the same language:
- Thesis Title
- Abstract
- Introduction
- Objectives and Hypotheses
- Methodology
- Results and Discussion
- Conclusions
- Bibliography
The Appendices may be in other languages if they were already published that way.
CHECK THE PECULIARITIES OF THE LANGUAGE IN THE DIFFERENT THESIS MODALITIES
- Writing: It is mandatory that at least 25 % of the thesis be written in a common scientific language in the field of knowledge of the thesis, other than the official or co-official languages in Spain. The language of the country where the research stay was carried out (or most of them) may also be used. This part must include complete written chapters or blocks, as well as the summary and conclusions. Indexes, annexes and bibliography will not be counted.
- Oral defense: At least 25 % of the oral presentation during the defense must also be in one of the languages mentioned above.
- Exception: These requirements do not apply if the stays, reports and experts come from an institution located in a Spanish-speaking country.
For defense requests submitted before 09/01/2025
Part of your thesis, at least the summary and conclusions, must be written and defended in one of the languages common for scientific communication in your area, other than any of the official languages in Spain. This rule will not apply when the stays, reports and presence of experts come from a center or institution in a Spanish-speaking country.
In theses based on a compendium of publications, the main body of the thesis may be written in Galician, in Spanish or in the language of the majority of the publications contained in the compendium.
A thesis under co-supervision may be written in the usual scientific language of the field of knowledge of the thesis or in one of the official languages of the universities that are signatories to the agreement.
The language chosen must be understandable to the CAPD, external experts, the EDIUS Executive Committee and the thesis evaluation committee.
