Biomembranes Lab
Matilde Casas Parada
Emi Vázquez Lage
Researcher
- Emi studied Pharmacy at USC, having done their Final Dissertation on the interaction of bevacizumab with components of lipid nanoparticles designed for the intravitreal treatment of retinal diseases. They began their path in research under Prof. Bebel Sández, founder and leader, now retired, of the Biomembranes Lab. Ever since, they participated in national and international chemistry congresses, as well as published articles in the field of monolayers as models of biological membrane models and supramolecular drug delivery systems.
- They worked for a year at the Molecular Biophysics and Biotechnology unit of the Applied Chemistry lab at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (Portugal), under the supervision of Professors Salette Reis and Marina Pinheiro. There, they studied the interaction of peptides and anti-tuberculosis drugs with membranes and how to characterise these interaction through spectroscopic and elipsometric techniques.
- Currently, they focus on the study of bacterial and cancer plasma membrane models, and on the effect of antimicrobial peptides on them, with Prof. Rebeca G. Fandiño and Prof. Ángel Piñeiro. They also participate in other projects within our lab along Prof. Matilde Casas.
- They carried out duties as student representative during their formative years, and they also take part in science communication activities.
Susana Álvarez Pérez
Research lab technician
- Susana has a Pharmacy degree by the USC, and she is a lab technician at the labs of Physical Chemistry and Bromatology of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
- She assists in the practical teaching of the subjects Physical Chemistry II, Nutrition and Bromatology I and II in the Pharmacy degree. She also collaborates in the teaching of the Specialisation Course in Orthopaedia provided by our Faculty.
León Felipe Ureña Sánchez
Student
- León is a 5th-year Pharmacy student. He joined biointerfaces research in 2023, through the Internship programme offeres by our Faculty, with the work "Interaction of gemini surfactants with lipid membranes: study at the a/w interface", which he could also exhibit in an international congress of chemistry. He is currently doing his Final Dissertation, also on the role of gemini surfactants on drug delivery thrpugh their effect on vesicle structure.
- He has worked as a student representative since 2020, having responsibilities in the State Coordination of Student Representatives of Public Universities (CREUP). He was also Vice-President of the Spanish Federation of Pharmacy Students.
