The Master’s Degree in Art and Cultural Heritage Management promoted by the University of Santiago de Compostela is an academic proposal with the priority objective of giving continuity at postgraduate level to the studies of History, Art History and Geography taught at the Faculty of Geography and History of the USC. This proposal derives directly from the profound reform of the Bachelor’s Degree in History of Art of the Faculty of Geography and History, which was carried out in the academic year 2022/23, and which will begin to be implemented in the academic year 2024/25.
The main academic rationale for this new degree is based on the growing demand for graduates in the humanities, and specifically in History of Art, who want to improve their training. These students would have access to a profile of professional studies in art and heritage management, valid for research through at the same time.
As far as scientific interest is concerned, the new master’s degree will confirm the deep-rootedness and importance of studies oriented towards the different artistic manifestations and heritage, as they have been included in the study plan of the degree in History of Art, a degree, it is important to remember, that is unique in Galicia.
The professional and social interest of the new degree is demonstrated by the versatile and varied training offered. Fields such as museology, exhibition curatorship, art criticism, art market consultancy, collection management, coordination of artistic and cultural projects, musealisation of archaeological sites, conservation and restoration consultancy, reports for cataloguing and protection of cultural assets, multidisciplinary teams to intervene in rehabilitation and master plans, interpretation and dissemination of heritage or cultural tourism, will benefit from the training provided to future graduates.
