Drug dependence and addictive behaviours are a central and important public health problem in developed countries. Substance abuse, pathological gambling, problematic use of the Internet and video games affect a large part of the population, while the use of illegal drugs is more prevalent in the younger population. In all of them, it causes incapacity and great suffering due to a wide range of pathologies, including neuropsychiatric ones. As a result, addictive behaviours in general and more specifically, the use of legal and illegal drugs, generates a great burden for the individual and for society as a whole, in terms of consumption of health resources, expenditure on preventive and treatment programmes, loss of work productivity due to premature deaths and fatalities, legal costs, pain and suffering that addiction generates for users and their immediate social environment.
Addictive behaviours are very present in society, which is why this training can be useful for the exercise of health and non-health activities of the professionals who take it beyond the specific drug addiction devices. The implementation of approach strategies in private practices, knowledge of the functioning of the public health care network, the ability to carry out prevention plans in schools and social entities of any kind are skills and knowledge necessary for a wide range of professionals interested in this problem.
Therefore, the need has been detected to implement a university master’s degree in the autonomous community of Galicia that aims to provide advanced academic training of a specialised and multidisciplinary nature oriented towards work and professional practice in the field of drug addiction and addictive behaviour.
