RP

ɪ

Small upper case i

Near-close, near-front, slightly-spread; checked (short), lax (weak).

For the articulation of RP /ɪ/ a part of the tongue nearer to the centre than the front is raised just above the half-close (or close-mid) position. The lips are slightly spread, the tongue is lax (compared with the tension for /i:/), and the side rims make a light contact with the upper molars. The quality is a centralized and closer CV 2 [e] = [ë].
