An approach to environmental topics from a dynamic and engaging perspective, encouraging students to feel like an active and integral part of the course.
The goal is to spark curiosity and interest in environmental issues and to share these with classmates and instructors, promoting active participation and class debate.
1. Climate change. A dangerous race...
2. Renewable energies as a solution for the future.
3. Genetically modified foods, the solution? Organic food as an alternative.
4. Not just about labels.
5. Topics of interest proposed by the students.
A field practice day is planned (a thematic outing related to course content).
Mainly based on documents obtained from the internet and current press articles; therefore, the sources may vary each year.
RESCO DE DIOS, V. "Ecomitos: los bulos ecológicos que agravan la crisis ambiental", Plataforma Editorial (2024).
Understanding of many environmental aspects from a cross-disciplinary educational perspective.
All topics are presented in a dynamic and attractive format to facilitate their presentation and understanding. PowerPoint is used as the main tool, complemented by video screenings and additional materials provided on the Virtual Classroom platform.
News related to environmental issues is reviewed regularly, and part of the class time is devoted to discussing them.
All essential materials (presentations, notes, support texts, bibliography, videos, etc.) will be made available via the Virtual Classroom. The platform's tools will be used to support course development and ensure fluid communication between teacher and student.
Students will have designated tutoring hours to resolve doubts, deepen their understanding, and improve their project presentations. Tutoring sessions can be conducted in person or through the USC-virtual system.
At the end of the course, each student must submit a paper related to the subject; optionally, a short presentation may be made in class at any point during the semester. The paper will be assessed together with attendance and participation in class activities.
Students who do not submit the required work or participate in continuous assessment due to lack of attendance will receive a grade of 'Absent'.
SUBMISSION OF WORK
Students must preferably submit their assignments through the virtual classroom or by email addressed to the instructors. Use of the * [at] rai.usc.es email account is mandatory.
ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Regarding individual or group work submitted for the course, the following guidelines should be followed:
- Avoid plastic covers or unnecessary external packaging.
- Use staples instead of any type of binding whenever possible.
- Print double-sided using “ink-saving” mode.
- Do not use blank pages as dividers between chapters or sections.
- Avoid including appendices that are not directly related to the developed topics.
FRAUDULENT CONDUCT
In cases of fraudulent conduct during assessments, the provisions of the 'Regulations on the evaluation of academic performance and grade review' shall apply.
Article 16: Fraudulent completion of any required exercise or test in a subject’s assessment will result in a failing grade for that session, regardless of any disciplinary action taken against the offending student. Fraud includes, among others, submitting plagiarized work or using publicly accessible sources without reworking or citing the authors and sources.
Class attendance (30 hours), time to prepare the final assignment (around 10 hours, depending on the topic chosen by each student), and time for additional activities as requested by the students (5 hours).
Active participation in class is recommended.
The Environmental Studies course is dynamic and evolves every year to address students’ concerns, fostering their participation and debate in the field of environmental issues. Although based on a core curriculum covering key environmental topics developed from student feedback, the course adapts annually to incorporate current issues, many of which are proposed by the students themselves. Topics are highly cross-disciplinary and range from climate change (environmental, social, economic, and political aspects) to food-related issues (specifically GMOs and organic farming), as well as renewable energies and other relevant emerging topics.
