This monographic course will focus on the work of playwright Joël Pommerat, one of the most important directors in contemporary French theatre and also one of its most acclaimed dramatists, whose work is created in close collaboration with the stage (“écrivain de plateau”). The course will explore in detail the traditional categories of theatre—action, characters, space, time, themes, dramatic writing, dramatic tension, the external structure of the play, etc.—in order to analyze the transformations of dramatic writing and Francophone theatre in the 21st century. To this end, a critical reading and study of three plays will be undertaken: La Réunification des deux Corées, Contes et légendes, and Ça ira (1) Fin de Louis. This will allow for the study of the specific features of Pommerat's writing and theatrical work. Examples of the staging of his plays will also be analyzed, and methodological tools for the analysis of theatrical performances will be introduced. The course will also examine to what extent some characteristics and themes of his plays appear in contemporary Francophone theatre.
Required Readings:
• La Réunification des deux Corées
• Contes et légendes
• Ça ira (1) Fin de Louis
Additional texts indicated or provided in class by the profesor will also be considered required readings.

Classes will be conducted in French: a good command of oral and written French at level C1 is required.
The course will be based on a combination of lectures and interactive sessions, with priority given to the latter and to students’ oral and written participation. This approach aims to enhance content learning and improve the students’ French language proficiency.
Students will be expected to prepare for class by reading and writing commentaries.
Class attendance is mandatory.
The final grade will be based on continuous assessment, which includes class participation and written assignments completed during the course (70%), and a final written exam (30%). This final exam will take place before Christmas. Students who do not pass the exam may take the official exam on the date set by the university.
A prerequisite for passing the course is achieving a C1 level in French by the end of the in-person classes.
Students officially excused from attending classes may choose between two evaluation methods:
a) continuous assessment of assignments and an oral exam on the course content (70%), plus the final exam (30%); or
b) a single final exam, consisting of both oral and written components, which will account for 100% of the final grade.
Students with attendance exemption must inform the instructor at the beginning of the course which evaluation method they choose.
In the June exam session, students must take the final exam only, which will include both oral and written components and account for 100% of the final grade.
Two hours of personal work are expected for every hour of class.
Office hours will be announced by the instructor at the beginning of the course.
Active class participation and continuous study are strongly recommended.
El nivel de lengua requerido para aprobar esta asignatura es C1.
