The Memory of Degree in Veterinary of the Veterinary Faculty of Lugo (approved on 30/06/2010 by the Conseil of Universities) shows that the title of Graduate in Veterinary Science from the USC general aims to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to enable them professionally to ensure the health of animals and humans.
The subject of Veterinary Microbiology provides elements and tools to deep in the knowledge of the biology, pathogenic mechanisms, diagnosis and control of the main microorganisms involved in diseases affecting farm animals and pets, plus other aspects in relation to public health.
The specific objectives of the subject are:
-Objective 1. To understand the basic concepts and scientific terminology used in microbiology.
-Objective 2. To know the structure, physiology, pathogenesis, genetics and taxonomy of microorganisms of clinical significance in veterinary and public health.
-Objective 3. To know the possible interactions between the organism and the host.
-Objective 4. To learn the basic techniques and methods of microbiological diagnosis.
-Goal 5. To know the methods of control of microorganisms.
The matter of Veterinary Microbiology divides in a theoretical part and a practical part.
The theoretical program of the asignatura divides in three blocks.
The BLOCK I is devoted to the GENERAL MICROBIOLOGY. The subject 1 serves of introduction and in the tackles the historical development of the Microbiology and analyses the microbial diversity. In the subjects 2 to 6 (BACTERIOLOGIA GENERAL, MICOLOGIA GENERAL And VIROLOGIA GENERAL) describe the general characteristics of the three main groups of veterinary interest: Bacteria, funguses and virus. The subjects 7 and 8 devote , respectively, alestudio of the pathogenic capacity of these three groups of microorganisms on the animals and to the control of the same by means of physical methods, quimicos, devoting special attention to the antimicrobic. Finally, in the subject 9 analyses the systematic microbial and the concepts of classification, identification and nomenclature.
The BLOCK II is devoted to the SPECIAL MICROBIOLOGY, that to his time includes three sections:
BACTERIOLOGIA SPECIAL (subjects 10 to 16).
MICOLOGIA SPECIAL (subject 17).
VIROLOGIA SPECIAL (subjects 18 to 23).
In each subject study the main bacteria, funguses and virus of veterinary interest.
