The objective of the course is for students to learn how to apply and integrate the knowledge, capacities, competencies and skills developed during the Bachelor's degree in Biotechnology.
A dissertation based on experimental (basic or applied research), industrial or bibliographic work (365h of personal work).
In this course the students will work on the following competencies:
BASIC AND GENERAL
As detailed in the Degree memorandum.
TRANSVERSAL
CT1 – Integrative thinking and ability to approach problems from different perspectives.
CT2 - Search, process, analyze and synthesize information from various sources.
CT3 -Organize and plan their work.
CT4 -Interpret experimental results and identify consistent and inconsistent elements.
CT5 -Work as a team.
CT6 - Reason critically.
CT7 - Maintain an ethical commitment.
CT8 -Adapt to new situations (resilience).
CT9 - Leadership and team management.
CT10 - Initiative and entrepreneurial spirit
SPECIFIC
CE1- Know how to make calculations, analyze data and interpret experimental results in different biotechnology areas.
CE2- Understand and be able to apply the physico-chemical principles of biological processes with biotechnological application, as well as the principal methods employed in their study.
CE3- Be familiar with and know how to apply instrumental techniques and protocols in a laboratory, applying the regulations and procedures related to safety and hygiene, waste management and quality.
CE4- Have an integrated view of the inner workings of cells, including biomolecules, metabolism, gene expression, relationships between cellular compartments, as well as communication and cell signaling mechanisms.
CE5- Know how to obtain and interpret information from major databases (biological, omic, bibliographic) and how to use bioinformatics tools.
CE6- Be able to analyze and design biotechnological industrial processes and apply them to product improvement.
CE7- Have knowledge about balances and transfers of matter and energy, applied thermodynamics and separation operations, as well as knowing how to apply them to solve engineering problems.
CE8- Identify and develop the unit operations of Chemical Engineering integrating them with their biological foundations.
CE9- Be able to identify the different types of viruses, microorganisms and animal and plant tissues, understand their development, organization and physiology and know their application in the field of Biotechnology.
CE10- Be familiar with the techniques employed to characterize proteins and be able to analyze and manipulate their structure for biotechnological applications.
CE11- Know the molecular basis and the techniques used to manipulate the genetic information of microorganisms, animals and plants and know how to apply those techniques in different biotechnological applications.
CE12- Comprehend the basic aspects of cell and tissue bioengineering, the therapeutic possibilities of regenerative medicine and its current limitations, both technical and ethical.
CE13- Clearly appreciate the ethical, social, economic and environmental implications of biotechnological work, as well as know and be able to apply assessment criteria for biotechnological risks.
CE14- Have an integrated vision of the R + D + i process and know how to describe basic business concepts, applying them to biotechnology companies.
CE15- Recognize the criteria for scaling biotechnological processes starting from data obtained in basic laboratory-scale experimentation, taking into account economic considerations and rationalizing the use of matter and energy.
The undergraduate dissertation will be carried out under the supervision of at least one tutor whose function will be to guide the student, as well as to monitor the work and issue a mandatory and confidential report before the dissertation defense. This report will be taken into account in the evaluation of the dissertation.
The tutor will schedule work sessions with the student, in which he/she will schedule the tasks to be carried out by the student. He/she will be responsible for explaining the work to each student, guiding them in their tasks and ensuring the fulfillment of the objectives.
The undergraduate dissertation will be defended by the students in front of a tribunal appointed by the dean at the proposal of the Undergraduate Dissertation Committee. The tribunal will be formed by three Biotechnology degree teachers. At least one of them will belong to an area related to the subject of the dissertation.
The oral presentation and defense of each dissertation will have a maximum duration of 15 minutes and will be public. The tribunal may formulate as many questions as it deems appropriate for a maximum time of 30 minutes.
The tribunal will evaluate the dissertation as follows:
Content of the work: 30%.
Written presentation: 30%.
Oral exposition: 30%.
Tutor's report: 10%.
After the undergraduate dissertations for the academic year have been defended, "honors marks" may be awarded to those dissertations that obtained a grade higher than 9. The number of honors marks can not exceed the limit established by the University. Honors marks will be awarded by the Undergraduate Dissertation Committee.
- Individual tutorials: 8 hours
- Exam and review: 2 hours
- Dissertation work and preparation of the defence: 365 hours
TOTAL WORK HOURS: 375 HOURS
In order to enroll in this course, students can not have more than 75 ECTS left to complete their degree (excluding those of the dissertation itself).
The regulations for undergraduate dissertations can be found on the Biology website:
https://www.usc.gal/es/centro/facultad-biologia/tfg
Contingency plan
The undergraduate dissertations will be adapted to the recommendations of the health authorities.
