1. Facilitate the historical-philological and bibliographic knowledge necessary for the edition and study of literature.
2. To train in the notions and techniques of the methodology of textual criticism.
3. Make known some of the problems that affect the transmission and editing of texts different from universal literature.
4. Delve into the different concepts of the bibliography: traditional, material, textual ..., in close connection with what has been developed in the subject “Material bibliography, codicology and history of the book”.
5. Instruct students in the knowledge and correct handling of critical issues.
Section 1. THEORETICAL FUNDAMENTS
1. Literary texts: particularities in the history of their transmission.
2. Typology of text editions. What is a critical edition and what is it for?
3. A brief history of the critical method: main trends and methodological contributions.
4. Application of the methods to the different textual traditions.
5. The philological annotation of texts.

1. The critical edition of medieval literary texts: the example of Alfonso X.
Unique tradition vs. tradition with various testimonies.

• Develop the ability to argue a hypothesis or point of view.
• Learn to work in an interdisciplinary way.
• Recognize the principles that regulate a critical edition, understood as the essential starting point for any subsequent study (literary, linguistic, stylistic, historical, etc.).
Sessions will combine the theoretical exposition of the theoretical principles on critical editing with the practical work, which will make it possible to illustrate the concepts and notions exposed in the theoretical classes, promoting their correct assimilation by the students.
The learning of the theoretical contents will be supported in practice in the edition and annotation of specific texts. In addition, reading of selected works will be requested in order to complement the theoretical/practical perspective on any of the specific points of the program.
Attendance at classes is considered essential to fully and satisfactorily acquire the expected skills, as well as to allow the active participation of students, through debates and short presentations.
The non-face-to-face training activities will be based on the autonomous work of the students, which will allow an improvement in the acquisition and assimilation of content, and which may consist of a review of notes and the critical reading of recommended texts. In addition, students have to prepare an individual work (see Assessement system).
Students need actively participate in face-to-face sessions. The final evaluation will take into account the attendance and participation of each student during the sessions, as well as the degree of relevance and acuity of their observations and results (30%).
According to the memory of the Master in Literature and Culture Studies, the students who exceed 25% of absences will not be able to attend the ordinary call and will have to do so at the second opportunity.
The evaluation will be based mainly on the completion of an essay (70%), in the first opportunity (deadline: December 15, 2022) and in the second opportunity (June 15, 2023).
Essay
As a work of initiation to the investigation, it must combine the state of the question with personal observations. The guidelines for the essay will be indicated at the beginning of the course. It is advisable to avoid the abuse of long citations and the abusive succession of citations even if they are brief. It has to be an original work and elaborated exclusively for the evaluation of this course. Plagiarism is not allowed.
It is possible to choose between two modalities:
1) It will consist of the preparation of an annotated critical edition proposal, individually. It will be previously agreed.
2) It will consist of the preparation of a detailed review / critical appraisal of a specific critical edition in printed or digital format. It will be previously agreed.
Students with an official teaching dispensation must carry out an essay of each modality (1 and 2), previously agreeing each of them.
