With the academic work carried out in this course, students should reach level B1 as established by the Common European Framework Reference (MCER). More specifically, students who successfully complete the coursework should be able to carry out these functions:
Listening comprehension:
- Can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure
etc., including short narratives.
- Can understand main ideas presented in radio and television programs that deal with common everyday personal and/or job
related topics, provided speech is clearly articulated in a generally familiar accent.
Reading comprehension:
- Can read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to his/her field and interest with a satisfactory level of
comprehension.
- Can understand description of facts, feelings and hopes in personal letters.
Oral exchanges:
- Can exploit a wide range of simple language to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling.
- Can communicate with some confidence on familiar routine and non-routine matters related to his/her interests and
professional field.
Oral expression:
- Can connect phrases in a simple manner in order to describe experiences, facts, dreams, hopes and ambitions.
- Can explain and briefly justify opinions and projects.
- Can narrate a story, and the plot of a book or movie.
- Can describe personal reactions to situations.
Written expression:
- Can write straightforward connected texts on a range of familiar subjects within his/her field of interest, by linking a series
of shorter discrete elements into a linear sequence.
- Can write personal letters and notes asking for or conveying experiences and impressions.
In addition to these general linguistic objectives, students are also expected to acquire a strong grasp of the vocabulary, syntactic patterns and discourse-structuring elements characteristic of academic communication at the B1, or higher, level.
Throughout this course grammar and vocabulary aspects related to the use of the English language will be studied. The work done will enable students to reach the level and course goals mentioned above, and more particularly, it will allow students to reach an acceptable level for the communicative activities in their everyday personal and professional life. In particular, vocabulary and commonly used expressions in the areas of travel, academic life, leisure time and professional activities, science and technology, home and family, etc. will be studied. The grammar to be covered includes aspects related to the appropriate use of verb tenses (paying special attention to the differences between English and the students’ mother tongue), modal verbs, conditionals, reported speech, articles and determiners, among others.
Course books and other materials used during the year
A course book and corresponding grammar book (level B1 / MCER) will be used: Murphy, Raymond. 2019 (5th edition). English Grammar in Use: A self-study reference and practice book for intermediate students of English. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

- Theory classes (1 hora per week): In these classes, the teacher’s presentation regarding grammatical questions will be
combined with students’ work through practical activities.
- Interactive sessions (2 hours per week): In these classes, the teachers will dedicate time to doing more practical exercises
concerning the different skills (writing comprehension, listening skills, written expression and oral expression) in which the
students will have to participate actively through the English language.
- Personalised tutor time: In these sessions, the students will have the possibility to ask about their doubts regarding any aspect
of the subject. This will be done in person or through virtual means.
In the event of a change of scenario, the modifications described in the comments section ("Contingency plan") will be applied.
In both the ordinary opportunity held in December/January and in the repeat exam in June/July, the performance of students will be assessed, as indicated below:
Continuous evaluation of class activities, individually or in groups: 50% which will be divided in the following way:
- 2 written pieces of work: 20% (10% each)
- Oral presentation: 20%
- Class participation: 10%
Final written exam (50%), which will consist of the following parts:
- Grammar and vocabulary: 30%
- Writing: 5%
- Reading comprehension: 7.5%
- Listening comprehension: 7.5%
For the repeat exam in June/July, the continuous assessment grade obtained during the course will remain unaltered. This assessment system will also apply in the case of those students retaking the subject.
Students who are officially exempt from attending class will be assessed only through the final written exam which will be worth 100% of their grade.
In the event of plagiarism/cheating being detected, in either the activites or the exam, the rules laid out in“Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións” will be applied.
In the event of a change of scenario, the modifications described in the comments section ("Contingency plan") will be applied.
The academic workload for students is as follows:
150 hours, 54 of which correspond to class activities while the remaining 96 will be autonomous work.
CONTINGENCY PLAN
The aforementioned teaching methodology and assessment will be applied in scenario 1 (“adapted normality”) described in the following document: “Bases para o desenvolvemento dunha docencia presencial segura no curso académico 2020-2021” which was passed by the University Governing Commision on June 19th 2020. If there is a change in scenario, both the teaching methodology and the assessment will be modified as follows:
SCENARIO 2: “DISTANCING”
Teaching methodology:
- Theory classes (1 hour per week): These will be held online through MS teams or Campus Virtual where videos, audio
recordings and other material will be uploaded by the lecturer.
- Interactive sessions (2 hours per week): If possible within the parameters established by the University and the Faculty, these sessions will be held in person as in scenario 1. Otherwise, they will be held in smaller groups or online.
- Tutorial time: Tutorials will be held mainly by virtual means through MS Teams or the messaging service of Campus Virtual.
Assessment system:
The aforementioned percentages will not change (50% continuous assessment and 50% final written exam). The oral presentations may take place online or alternatively in person in smaller groups. The final exam will be online through Campus Virtual.
In the case of plagiarism/cheating being detected, in either the activites or the exam, the rules laid out in“Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións” will be applied.
SCENARIO 3: "COMPLETE LOCKDOWN"
Teaching methodology:
- Theory classes (1 hour per week): These will be held online through MS teams or Campus Virtual where videos, audio
recordings and other material will be uploaded by the lecturer.
- Interactive sessions (2 hours per week): These will be held online through MS teams or Campus Virtual.
- Tutorial time: Tutorials will be held by virtual means through MS Teams or the messaging service of Campus Virtual.
Assessment system:
The aforementioned percentages will not change (50% continuous assessment and 50% final written exam). The oral presentations will take place online on MS Teams and the final exam will be online through Campus Virtual.
In the event of plagiarism/cheating being detected, in either the activites or the exam, the rules laid out in“Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións” will be applied.
