Theoretical contents:
1 To present the basic terminology used in the subject and in the area of Animal Production of ruminants.
2. To transmit to the student the coordination and application of the physiological knowledge and animal needs and, furthermore, the installations, environmental conditions and the more adequate handling so that the rearing and exploitation of ruminant animals useful for men make possible the viability, return and growth of the stockbreeding enterprise.
Skills:
3. To offer informative infrastructure enough so that the veterinarian-to-be can answer the present demands of the stockbreeders, being directed towards the quality improvement of the obtained cattle products.
Attitudes:
4. To give students an integrating concept of all the different subjects of Animal Production, to promote the formation of a mentality in which the knowledge of rural environment and its protection should guide his/her professional conduct.
5. To develop a critical and non-dogmatic attitude in the capacity of diagnosis and proposal of solutions before concrete situations of stockbreeding farms and advise to their owners.
RUMINANTS: it deals with the study of every most relevant sub sector of ruminants’ species: milk cattle, meat cattle, sheep and goats. Every sub sector is about the exploited races and abilities; census and productions; general characteristics of housing, materials and tools; handling of feeding, reproduction, etc; hygiene of housing and animals. Besides, they are analyzed the more relevant reproductive and productive ratings.
UNIT 1 (6 hours). Production of milk cattle: census and productions. COM of the milk cattle sector. Animal base. Systems of exploitation. Installations and equipments. Installations hygiene. Reproduction. Lactation and milking routine. Dairy control. Management and agricultural good practice code. Reproductive and productive ratings.
UNIT 2 (4 hours). Production of meat cattle: census and productions. COM of meat cattle sector. Animal base. Systems of exploitation. Installations and equipments. Installations hygiene. Reproduction and handling of the nurse-cow. Types of cattle for slaughter. Cattle carcass. Productive profits. Fighting cattle.
UNIT 3 (3 hours). Sheep production: census and productions. COM of sheep sector. Animal base. Systems of exploitation. Types of production: milk, meat, fur. Installations and equipments. Installations hygiene. Reproduction and handling. Reproductive and productive ratings.
UNIT 4 (3 hours). Goats production: census and productions. COM of goats sector. Animal base. Systems of exploitation. Types of production: milk, meat, fur. Installations and equipments. Installations hygiene. Reproduction and handling. Reproductive and productive ratings.
UNIT 5 (1 hour). Production of ruminants of zoo technical interest: production of other bovids (bison, buffalo, zebu, etc.), cervidae (elk, deer, roe deer, buck, etc.) and camelids (camel, llama, etc.): area of location, system of production and more outstanding productive ratings.

Therical program:
17 sessions of 50 minutes of each one throughout the first semester according to schedules approved by the Faculty Board for each academic course. The last 10 minutes of each session can be dedicated to synthesize the treated subject, to fix the concepts exposed and to solve the possible doubts that have been able to provoke, ace as to verify of way succinct with random oral questions, the degree of compression on the part of the students of the explained subject.
External professionals could be invited to give talks.
Practical program:
o Active farm visit 1: Visit operation of milk bovine: Recognition and use of the material and cattle tools; determine the proportions planimetry and of the operation; productive indices; study of seasonal breeding.
o Active farm visit 2: Visit operation of bovine of meat: Recognition and use of the material and cattle tools; determine the proportions planimetry and of the operation; productive indices; study of seasonal breeding.
o Active farm visit 3: Visit operation of goat ovine/: Recognition and use of the material and cattle tools; determine the proportions planimetry and of the operation; productive indices; quantitative and qualitative determination of the lactation curve; study of p seasonal breeding;
In each visited operation, the student will be able to observe the constructive characteristics and determine the proportions of the facilities; the environmental average control; the hygiene, cleaning and biosecurity of the facilities; the general handling of the animals carried out by the workers of the operation, including the handling of the feeding; the sanitary programs and of prophylaxis, etc. In all the operations, given the measures of biosecurity of same and in fulfillment of the norms of effective well-being the animal, the visits will become under a strict control and without disturbing the habitat of the animal, trying to cause the smaller possible incidence on the animal and its surroundings. In each visit the students will have to complete a script previously elaborated by the professors responsible for the subject, in which he will analyze the most excellent characteristics of the visited operation, determining the productive parameters of the same one. These practical works allow to the student a direct bonding with the operation and the observation of the real situation of the same one, analyzing their problematic one and initiating to them in one of the possible professional exits of the degree as it is the technical and economic advising of the cattle operations. Also, the elaboration of these works will develop in the student the technique of critical thought and will foment the work and the dynamics of groups.
Practical laboratory/computer classroom 1, 2 and 3: Search and treatment of technical information of pages of interest WWW. related to the subject. Economic technical analysis of cattle, sheep and goat farms in their double productive aptitude. The student will be taught to calculate and interpret the productive/economic parameters of the different species studied. (10 hours)
These practices will be complemented with a memory elaborated by the student with the made thing in the same one.
Tutorials:
Two hours are devoted to individual tutorials
The students’ final assessment is based on a written exam including both the issues explained during the theoretical and practical sessions. Besides, it will be compulsory to present the handed pieces of work perfomed in the practical sessions., as a way to prepare this part for the final written exam. It is vital to obtain a punctuation equal or higher to 50% to pass the subject. The students must be pass both the training given in the theoretical and practical sessions separately.
- Assessment of theoretical knowledge: 80% of the final mark
- Evaluation of the seminar and practical sessions: 20% of the final mark
This section will be assessed on the one hand, the work carried out, and secondly, their presentation in class in front of their peers.

- Attending regularly to classes.
- Trying to understand and to reason the structure and functioning of a livestock farm and not only to memorize some data to be able to repeat them in an exam.
- Making a good use of tutorials with regularity and without waiting for the last week before the exam.
- Having the aptitude for gathering and absorbing all the information that they will receive in their visits to farms, so that it is required a great capacity to watch and big doses of curiosity.
- Fulfilling the entrusted pieces of work along the academic year, without burdens at the end of the year.
CONTINGENCY PLAN IN THE EVENT OF AN INCIDENT CAUSING THE CHANGE TO SCENARIOS 2 OR 3
-Teaching methodology:
Scenario 2 (distancing):
•Expository classes taught synchronously and telematically using Ms Teams or any other platform designed and approved for this purpose. The telematic classes will be complemented with the systematic use of the Virtual Campus to support teaching.
• Autonomous classroom practical work in small groups and supervised by the teacher. The time in laboratory/computer classroom practices can be reduced by up to 50%, according to health recommendations, so that distance measures can be strengthened but maintaining the same hours and practical activities for each group. In the case of classroom time reduction, this will be complemented with telematic sessions.
Visits to the farms (in small groups in any of the scenarios) may be kept on schedule or replaced in whole or in part by virtual visits and practical seminars based on official health recommendations as well as those from the farms themselves.
In all practices (including transfers to farms), the hygienic-sanitary measures will be mandatory, and will be reinforced according to the sanitary recommendations of the moment (hydrogel, mandatory mask when it is not possible to guarantee the minimum safety distance). , etc.).
• Independent study of each student.
• Tutorials, only telematic.
Scenario 3 (closure of facilities):
• Expository classes taught telematically through Ms Teams, Skype, Zoom or any other platform designed and approved for this purpose. The telematic classes will be complemented with the systematic use of the Virtual Campus to support teaching.
• Practical teaching in a virtual way, keeping the schedules programmed and using the Virtual Classroom of the subject as support, as well as Ms Teams or other institutional enabled platforms. In this case, visits to farms will be replaced by virtual visits and practical seminars, but the contents of the laboratory / computer classroom practices will be maintained.
• Independent study of each student.
• Tutorials, only telematic.
- Evaluation system
Scenario 2 (distancing):
- Regular attendance at synchronous telematic expositive sessions and compulsory at scheduled practical activities. To take the exam, it is necessary to attend 100% of the practical sessions, including classroom work and work carried out virtually through authorized institutional platforms.
- The final exam of the expository matter (60% of the final grade) will be carried out synchronously and telematically, although if the sanitary norm allows it, this test can be done in person, adopting the hygienic-sanitary measures regulated.
- The continuous evaluation of the practical activity (40% of the final grade) will be carried out by combining presential classroom and /or telematic test and tasks, both synchronous and asynchronous. It is necessary to obtain a minimum of 5 points (out of 10) in each part (expository and practical) to proceed to calculate the final average grade. As mentioned, attendance at practical sessions is mandatory.
In case of plagiarism, fraud or improper use of technologies for the realization of the telematic tests, the provisions of the “Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións” will apply.
Hygienic-sanitary measures will be maintained or implemented in accordance with sanitary recommendations (hydrogel, mask requirement when it is not possible to guarantee the minimum safety distance, etc.).
