The course objectives are as follows:
To study the English language and its norms, its orthography, lexicon and specific phraseology, with special emphasis on its use in a journalistic and audiovisual
setting; in its spoken form as well as written, in the terminology used in order to express ideas and content, to be able to study the language in a practical manner
within the technical field of journalism and audiovisual communication.
At the end of the course the students will be able to:
- Consolidate and update their knowledge of the foreign language by means of the study of grammar, the acquisition of vocabulary and the practice of the four language skills.
- Develop vocabulary for the Media through academic strategies, with a view to reaching a common level of communicative competence.
- Become acquainted with notions and tools related to the field of Communication Studies.
- Extend students own awareness of critical reading.
- Grammar (Verb tenses, the passive voice, prepositions, countable and uncountable nouns, modal verbs, reported speech, phrasal verbs)
- Writing (General writing skills, with a focus on style and punctuation, particularly between various print media and advertising. The students will learn writing skills in
order to communicate effectively in English)
- Reading (The students will regularly read articles and learn how to analyse and summarise them effectively)
- Listening (Development of listening skills and comprehension using radio,
podcasts, TV, etc.)
- Speaking (The students will regularly participate in class discussions and debates.
Only English will be spoken in class, so the students can become familiar with the language and become comfortable using it constantly.)
- Analysis of different media - The students will become familiar with new vocabulary in order to describe and discuss newspapers (both tabloids and broadsheets), magazines, radio, TV, film, news and current affairs, etc. both in oral and written expression.appears in newspapers as well as in magazines, advertising, etc.
Tasks and assignments:
- Reading and discussion of texts (both individually and in groups)
- Reading of articles in different print media such as newspapers (the Sun, the Daily Mirror, or the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian), or on websites, to illustrate how
the different papers approach the same story.
- Grammar exercises
- Writing and listening exercises (making summaries, writing articles, advertisements, film reviews)

- Note: some transversal topics will be dealt with, such as gender roles in advertising, the influence of mass media on body image, etc. Some of the subtopics above are relevant in more than one unit, for example, photography appears in newspapers as well as in magazines, advertising, etc.

CB2 - That the students know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional manner, and that they possess the skills to demonstrate the

5.5.1.5.3 SPECIFICS
CE16 - The correct use of the English language in the context of audiovisual communication.

The classes will combine a theoretical presentation and practical analysis of texts.
In the event of any of the contingency scenarios being decreed, the indications given in the Observations section under the 'Contingency Plan' heading will apply.
Assessment must be continuous and will be performed by taking into account the educational objectives and the assessment criteria below:
Weighting of assessment:
-In-class assignments: 30%
- Final exam: 70%
The assessment system will be the same in the first and second calls, as well as for the repeating students. The students with official leave not to attend will be assessed
by means of a final exam (100%).
IMPORTANT
-Lessons will be conducted in English. The correct use of the English language will be taken into account for assessment purposes.
-Inadequate academic conduct (plagiarism, cheating, etc.) will be penalized. Note the following about plagiarism: In the event of fraudulent performance of exercises or
tests, art. 16 of the Regulations for the assessment of students academic performance:
“A fraudulent performance during an exercise or test will mean a fail grade in the corresponding call, regardless of disciplinary process that may be followed against the offending student. Plagiarised work or work carried out by using information obtained from accessible sources open to the public, among others, without due re-elaboration or reinterpretation with quotes from the authors and the sources, are considered fraudulent."

The students must come to class (both 'expositivas' and 'seminarios') regularly and participate actively.
CONTINGENCY PLAN: to be applied in case the relevant authorities decreed scenarios 2 or 3.
(1) Methodology:
The methodology will be adapted to the guidelines established by the USC and to the parameters agreed by the Faculty, so that teaching activities that cannot be carried out in person will be carried out virtually using the institutional tools made available by the USC, combining activities of a synchronous nature (mainly through the TEAMS platform) and / or asynchronous (mainly through TEAMS or Moodle) depending on the type of activity.
(2) Assessment:
In the blended teaching modality, whenever possible, the same evaluation system as in scenario 1. If this is not possible, or if In Scenario 3, face-to-face tests will be replaced by telematic tests (synchronous or asynchronous, oral or written) using institutional tools.
