The course objectives are as follows:
To study the English language and its norms, its orthography, lexicon and specific phraseology, with special emphasis on its use in a journalistic and audiovisual setting; in its spoken form as well as written, in the terminology used in order to express ideas and content, to be able to study the language in a practical manner within the technical field of journalism and audiovisual communication.
At the end of the course the students will be able to:
- Consolidate and update their knowledge of the foreign language by means of the study of grammar, the acquisition of vocabulary and the practice of the four language skills.
- Develop vocabulary for the Media through academic strategies, with a view to reaching a common level of communicative competence.
- Become acquainted with notions and tools related to the field of Communication Studies.
- Extend students own awareness of critical reading.
- Grammar (Verb tenses, the passive voice, prepositions, countable and uncountable nouns, modal verbs, reported speech, phrasal verbs)
- Writing (General writing skills, with a focus on style and punctuation, particularly between various print media and advertising. The students will learn writing skills in order to communicate effectively in English)
- Reading (The students will regularly read articles and learn how to analyse and summarise them effectively)
- Listening (Development of listening skills and comprehension using radio, podcasts, TV, etc.)
- Speaking (The students will regularly participate in class discussions and debates.
Only English will be spoken in class, so the students can become familiar with the language and become comfortable using it constantly.)
- Analysis of different media - The students will become familiar with new vocabulary in order to describe and discuss newspapers (both tabloids and broadsheets), magazines, radio, TV, film, news and current affairs, etc. both in oral and written expression.appears in newspapers as well as in magazines, advertising, etc.
Tasks and assignments:
- Reading and discussion of texts (both individually and in groups)
- Reading of articles in different print media such as newspapers (the Sun, the Daily Mirror, or the Daily Telegraph and the Guardian), or on websites, to illustrate how the different papers approach the same story.
- Grammar exercises
- Writing and listening exercises (making summaries, writing articles, advertisements, film reviews) The units through which the aforementioned skills will be developed are:

- The role of social networks (such as Twitter) in digital journalism.
- Political satire.

- Digital formats.

8. Marketing
- Note: some transversal topics will be dealt with, such as gender roles in advertising, the influence of mass media on body image, etc. Some of the subtopics above are relevant in more than one unit, for example, photography appears in newspapers as well as in magazines, advertising, etc.

- BASIC AND GENERAL
CG1 - Acquire and understand the most important concepts, methods and results of the different branches of communication, with a historical perspective of their development.
CG2 - Gather and interpret relevant data, information and results, as well as draw conclusions and issue reasoned reports.
CG3- Apply the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired, as well as the capacity of analysis and abstraction, both in the definition and presentation of problems and in the search for their solutions in academic and professional contexts.

CE16 - The correct use of the English language in the context of audiovisual communication.
The classes will combine a theoretical presentation and practical analysis of texts.
A. FIRST CHANCE
Students may choose between two evaluation modalities: final exam or continuous assessment
1) Final exam, representing 100% of the overall grade, on the official date.
2) Continuous evaluation
Students who opt for continuous evaluation will have to attend at least 80% of the classes and will have to take a series of tests throughout the course:
- two 'writing exercises' (20% + 20%)
- a test with listening, reading and vocabulary exercises (30%)
- a speaking test (30%). The final grade will be the sum of the grade obtained in each of these exercises.
Students who opt for continuous evaluation will not have to take the final exam on the official date.
This evaluation system will also be applicable to repeating students.
IMPORTANT
-The vehicular language will be English. The correct use of the English language will be taken into account in the evaluation.
-Academic misconduct (plagiarism, copying in exams, etc.) will be penalized. Note the following about plagiarism: In case of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of art. 16 of the "Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións" will apply:
“A realización fraudulenta dalgún exercicio ou proba exixida na avaliación dunha materia implicará a cualificación de suspenso na convocatoria correspondente, con independencia do proceso disciplinario que se poida seguir contra o alumno infractor. Considerarse fraudulenta, entre outras, a realización de traballos plaxiados ou obtidos de fontes accesibles ao público sen reelaboración ou reinterpretación e sen citas aos autores e das fontes”.
B. SECOND CHANCE AND STUDENTS WHO ARE OFFICIALLY EXEMPT FROM ATTENDING CLASSES
100% Final exam
In accordance with the regulations of permanence in force at the USC for Bachelor's and Master's studies (art. 5.2), the presence, as well as participation in any of the activities carried out in the interactive classes, will be subject to evaluation and, therefore, the final grade of the student who completes them in no case will be 'Not Presented'.

The students must come to class (both 'expositivas' and 'seminarios') regularly and participate actively.
Students who are unable to attend 80% of the classes for justified medical or family reasons are required to contact the subject´s coordinator to agree an alternative study plan although they will still be required to choose between either the continuous assessment system or sitting the final exam.
