The main objective of this course is to provide an overview and therefore necessarily a selective view of various electronic lexicographic resources of some Romance languages.
The specific objectives are listed below:
- To provide and help students acquire the basic knowledge of electronic lexicography.
- To introduce students to metalexicography (dictionary structure, typology, purpose, relation to other disciplines, methodology, etc.).
- To provide an overview of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual electronic lexicography in Romance languages.
- To encourage the critical use of lexicographic information according to the user's experience.
- To promote interest in e-lexicography through practice.
1. Introduction
1.1 Basic concepts: e-lexicography, linguistic corpora, lexicographic resources
1.2 The role of language corpora as a lexicographic database
2. Overview of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual electronic resources of Romance languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French etc.
3. "Dictionaries of dictionaries" and collaborative dictionaries
3.1 Portals and integrated resource platforms (Rilga)
3.2 Other tools with resource integration: Wordnet, Galnet, Babelnet, etc.
3.3 Collaborative lexicographic projects: Wiktionary
3.4 Collaborative dictionary editing/production: MediaWiki, LanguageForge, Lexonomy

Students will be able to:
- Identify the added value of an electronic dictionary compared to a printed dictionary and analyse it from a critical perspective.
- Identify the typology of dictionaries and electronic resources of Romance languages and their fields of application.
- Handle different e-resources for solving lexicographical, theoretical and typological problems.
- Critically engage with the current state of e-lexicography of Romance languages.
- Develop basic lexicographic e-resources by applying new methods and technologies.

Classes (face-to-face or virtual) will be combined with interactive sessions (debates, projects, assignments, presentations, etc.). Active participation of students in the proposed activities is essential for adequate progress. The USC institutional work platform (virtual classroom) will be used.
First evaluation date:
Continuous work is assessed (100%).
During the semester, students must complete two short collaborative projects that related to the content covered in class. The specific projects will be presented in the classroom. Project a): Design and development of a multilingual electronic dictionary that can be consulted via a messaging app. This part constitutes 60% of the final grade. Project b) involves the creation of a small multilingual dictionary at the A1-A2 level of several Romance languages. This second project constitutes 40% of the final mark.
Second evaluation date:
100% of the grade: individual written assignment, the topic of which must be agreed with the lecturer.
Students who are exempt from attending classes and students who are repeating the subject and cannot attend classes: written homework (approx. 40 pages) 100% of the grade.
If fraud is detected during the exercises, homework and examinations, paragraph 16 of the "Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións" comes into force.
Teaching hours: 35 hours
Consultation hours: 5 hours (to prepare the written work and the oral presentation)
Total: approx. 85 hours
Regular course attendance, continuous study and the use of recommended learning resources are recommended.
The following is expected of students:
- Active and regular participation in class
- Work both individually and in groups
- Pre- and post-processing of the lessons (reading, exercises, videos, etc.).
The lessons will be held in English. Other languages such as Spanish, French, etc. will be used for support if necessary.
