Purpose The course aims at empowering the participants to conduct research in the humanities using quantitative methods, i.e. collecting and analyzing information expressed in numbers, and drawing conclusions by using statistics. Specifically, we will train analyses of how something is related to something else, often as cause-and-effect. Format The format is some lectures, and much training in analysis of data, with graphs and statistics, on laptops using a common software, SPSS (that you download from Blackboard or install at your home-institution). Prerequisites Curiosity and energy. The course will use much intuition, visualization and play with numbers, such as percentages, averages and cross-tabulations, but not mathematics. Content: Graphing distribution of a variable, using pie chart and histogram Graphing association between two variables, using bar graph, clustered bar graph, scatterplot. Calculating a cross-tab, comparison of means, correlation coefficient. Testing a hypotheses (for cross-tab, compare means, correlation). Linear regression, also recoding a categorical variable into dummies, interaction. Logistic regression, also with categorial var, interaction, oddsratio.
