'Within every dystopia there is a little utopia': The Principles of Dystopian Fiction through the Work of Margaret Atwood

In 2017, The New Yorker defined writer Margaret Atwood as the 'prophet of dystopia', a woman whose catastrophic visions became true. Atwood not only envisioned a near-future full of corrupt values, destroying forces, and broken souls; she also left a textual testimony of it through her dystopian novels. Nevertheless, Atwood's own voice did not take long to be heard: 'I am not a prophet. Science fiction is really about now' (Allardice, 2018). The following BA thesis aims to first examine the conventions of dystopian fiction, which often departs from cynical readings by questioning the foundations of contemporary societies in order to imagine the worst possible (or impossible) versions of them. Thus, even though dystopias oppose utopias, they also mirror them, signalling ways in which our future could be if the present is not changed. Regarding the methodology, Margaret Atwood's work will be the study's focal point: particular attention will be paid to her portrayal of interpersonal relationships as well as to human behaviour towards other living beings and the environment. In addition to this, the corruption of humanity and its effects will be discussed and extrapolated from a literary perspective to reality. To this end, this dissertation will also inspect the postulates of the cli-fi genre and the applications of radical posthuman philosophy, among others. Finally, conclusions will also consider Atwood’s employment of literary resources, such as humour or complex metaphors to address her readership.

Translation has been defended as one of the most effective means of promoting and standardizing a language, as well as an important tool for the survival of historically minoritized languages. Nowadays, the development of audiovisual media entails an increasing demand for translations for new types of products, such as those developed within the video game industry. This field, which has seen a considerable growth in recent years, is characterized by the omnipresence of English as its lingua franca, with this language frequently being the source language for many translation orders. The purpose of this undergraduate dissertation is to present an exploration of video game localization as a professional practice, together with a translation proposal for the localization from English to Galician of the video game Papers, Please (3909 LLC, 2013). In this puzzle-simulation game, the player is put in the shoes of a border inspector over the course of 31 working days, in which he interacts with people applying to enter his country, with other guards, and with his superiors. Given this setting, the player can expect to interact with an ample text typology, which includes administrative documents, regulations, press, pamphlets, business cards, personal notes, and dialogue between characters, among others. In this variety of texts one can find differences in register, insults and foul language, and different linguistic uses that will depend on power dynamics and the geographical origin of the sender. These aspects pose translation problems to be considered by the professional video game localizer, especially when working with a target language for which the possible lack of adequate reference material would require proposing original solutions. This work is also meant to be a contribution to the presence of the Galician language in an industry mainly targeted at a demographic that features a reported loss of Galician speakers.

The interest in TV shows and movies set and produced in other English-speaking areas outside of the USA has increased significantly due to streaming services such as Netflix. Language acts not only as a vehicle of communication, but it also indirectly expresses our social and cultural identity. Therefore, it is preferable for screenwriters to be aware of the linguistic particularities of the specific settings they choose to build their stories in. The team behind Heartbreak High (2022), a Netflix show set in Australia, accurately uses dialectal traits to build their characters’ identities not only as Australians, but also as belonging to other collectives, such as a specific social class. This paper aims to examine how Australian English is represented in this specific show and why this representation is successful at constructing an image of Australian society. Firstly, as a background, the context of Australia as an English speaking country will be provided. Secondly, some linguistic features, namely accent and dialectal variations, including lexical and grammatical features, will be described by exploring academic research done about this topic, such as Peter Trudgill’s International English (1982). Then, a few selected characters will be analyzed by explaining their particular background and what specific traits of Australian English are used in each individual to accurately showcase their identity.

The objective of this Final Degree Project is to analyze the linguistic ideologies of users, mostly young people, that arise from the public debate on the social network TikTok. For the research, a corpus of spoken and written language was used, which provided us with interesting perspectives for understanding the situation of the Galician language in today's society present on social networks, specifically on TikTok. With the arrival of social networks, a space for communication was generated in which speakers express their ideas and concerns, giving rise to sociolinguistic commentaries. This led to debates in which linguistic norms and what is considered appropriate or inappropriate for the use of the language on social networks are discussed. Using the methodology of discourse analysis, a qualitative study was conducted that determined the different linguistic ideologies that speakers create with their discourses on contemporary Galician, the ideology of standardization, and purism.

This Bachelor's thesis aims to analyze linguistic variation in apparent time in areas of the municipality of A Capela, specifically in three of its parishes: Caaveiro, Cabalar, and A Capela. The focus will be on vocabulary related to farming and agriculture, two semantic fields of particular interest in this municipality, as A Capela is an area where a significant portion of the population traditionally made their living from these rural activities. The information will be obtained through interviews with speakers from three different generations of five families, including both women and men who are Galician speakers. Since the 1980s, perceptual dialectology (Preston, 2010) has emerged as one of the most useful disciplines for the study of social representations of language varieties. Unlike traditional dialectology, folk linguistics incorporates the perspective of speakers and recognises the influence of dominant linguistic ideologies in shaping perceptions. This paradigm shift allows dialectal variation to be approached not only as a purely geographical phenomenon, but also as an intersubjective social construction. The present study, framed within the ESLORA++ project of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, aims to analyse the linguistic beliefs, attitudes and ideologies of a group of 62 Galician university students about the varieties of Spanish in Spain, for which a methodology combining a quantitative and qualitative approach will be applied. Special emphasis will be placed on the notions of correctness and the pressure of the standard in the social evaluation of the different dialects (Milroy and Milroy, 1985), on the varieties of Spanish in contact with another co-official languages of Spain and, in particular, on Spanish in Galicia. In the collection and processing of the information, both current legislation on data protection and consent forms provided by the Bioethics Committee of the USC have been followed. All the data were anonymised and the informants gave their consent for them to be used for teaching, academic or research purposes.

This paper analyzes the footprint of the Way of Saint James in the Linguistic Landscape (PL) in the towns of Padrón and Negreira. Taking into account that, this serves as a space to understand the cultural and social dynamics of territory, this study is fundamental to understanding the relationship between language and cultural identity. Through the analysis of the presence of Galician in public spaces, we can observe how the local language is preserved or modified according to different factors, among others, tourism, the economy or globalization. It also allows evaluating the effectiveness of language policies and identifying processes of sociolinguistic change. Padrón, the last stop on the Portuguese Way, and Negreira, the first stage of the Fisterra-Muxía Way, offer a significant opportunity to study how the Jacobean route modifies the linguistic environment in these localities. The research focuses on the analysis of visible elements, such as signs, information posters or names of establishments. In addition, the dynamics of linguistic coexistence between Galician and other languages related to the internationalization of the Camino de Santiago are explored. The methodology consists in the delimitation of geographical space, defining the specific areas that will be the object of analysis. In these areas, photographs will be taken of the entire space, excluding internal or dynamic elements, such as temporary texts. Later, the classification and analysis will be carried out of these images; to finally draw up a conclusion that allows a clear understanding of the linguistic dynamics present in these public places. The results will make it possible to know the relationship between the Way of Saint James and the Linguistic Landscape (PL), highlighting its cultural, identity and tourism implications.

Gender and discourse in the public sphere: unraveling the dynamics of language.

The discipline of Discourse Analysis stands as a theoretical and methodological branch whose main objective is to observe, describe and examine the ways in which texts (considered not only as linguistic creations, but also as significant social practices) are produced, interpreted and placed in a specific socio-cultural and historical framework; that is, language is not a passive mirror of reality, but an active instrument in the formation of structures of thought, power and identity construction. In this line, we often witness apparently inoffensive speeches, masked behind grammatical tools susceptible of a revision that evidences everything that underlies what is transmitted. With this objective in mind, this paper will attempt to delve into contemporary discursive dynamics, always from a gender perspective; and to this end, in this analysis we will analyze the contrasting positions offered by the linguists Deborah Cameron and Deborah Tannen. Likewise, in order to exemplify and cement this theoretical proposal on practical cases, we will resort to the examination of models extracted from the media and social networks, which will allow us to observe how language can offer essential keys to understand and transform current narratives in terms of gender.

With this objective in mind, this paper will attempt to delve into contemporary discursive dynamics, always from a gender perspective; and to this end, in this analysis we will analyze the contrasting positions offered by the linguists Deborah Cameron and Deborah Tannen. Likewise, in order to exemplify and cement this theoretical proposal on practical cases, we will resort to the examination of models extracted from the media and social networks, which will allow us to observe how language can offer essential keys to understand and transform current narratives in terms of gender.

This work focuses on the cosmological conception of Fray Luis de León's lyrical poetry, exploring both the author's poetic vision and the richness of the currents that influenced his work, from a diachronic and universal perspective. The objective of this work is to study the relationship between the poet-astronomer's lyricism and contemplations of space. To this end, the proposed methodology will consider issues such as the planetary journey of the soul, the order of the stars in the universe, and the lyrical conception of the cosmos, themes that have preoccupied humanity throughout the centuries and, as is the case in the ascetic literature of this author from Cuenca, have frequently been explored through poetry. Thus, an analysis will be carried out of the most relevant poetic topics related to Fray Luis's planetary poetry since Greco-Roman Antiquity, conducting a study of the poet's life and work, the author's possible literary influences, and the transcendental correlations of the symbols used in poems that address the harmony of spatial elements. Odes III and VIII will be taken as a basis, keeping in mind other transcendental works, such as Garcilaso's Elegy I. At the same time, a multidisciplinary approach will be followed when linking the poetry of the spheres with other fields of art and knowledge, such as music (especially the work of Francisco de Salinas) and painting.

The Portuguese language is a widely debated topic in different social segments, especially in the areas of social sciences and sociolinguistics. It is seen as the language of identification of communities that are geographically distant, but that share the same language as official or native. Based on this premise, the purpose of this study was to understand the variants of Portuguese in the process of interaction between students. However, it is in linguistic interaction with other speakers of the same language that one perceives the diversity and changes resulting from the way of speaking, the meaning that words take on, among other elements that highlight the different directions that the language is taking. Thus, in verbal communication, the use of different terms is observed in various groups, resulting in the creation of varied dialects. For this purpose, case research was carried out with Portuguese-speaking students at USC in Galicia, using a qualitative methodological approach, which consisted of interviews with 13 students from Portuguese-speaking countries and three interviews with Galician students, in addition to the organization of a group focus with students from Portuguese-speaking countries. Therefore, the evaluation of the data and the conclusions reveal how students interact and understand Portuguese in its most diverse variants.

This dissertation focusses on the translation of English ‘rude’ language into Spanish, through a television series. Rude or ‘bad’ language is used by a large part of the language community in their everyday life, but it is usually regarded as offensive and taboo by some sectors of our society (Beers, 2012). Nonetheless, we cannot forget that this kind of vernacular is crucial for the usage of informal speech, mainly, as well as a marker of the relationship between interlocutors. Moreover, within groups of teenage people, in particular, it is a marker of groups identity. Having this in mind, the translation of this language is essential, especially if we focus on films and TV shows that have adolescents as their main target. The translation of swearwords is complex as there are many small details that need to be accounted for, such as difference across languages (Dobao, 2006), individual usage, the different meanings of specific swearwords in different contexts etc. (Pavesi and Formentelli, 2023). A good translation by its own is crucial, but when dealing with dubbing, and even more so, when dealing with swearwords is even more essential as a good adaptation is required, so that the target public can recognize the situation that is being depicted. This dissertation will be divided into two main parts, the first one will consist in a thorough revision of the literature that deals with the topic: specific problems of audiovisual translation; definition, typology and function of swearwords; rude language in English and Spanish; the importance of swearwords in cinema; the difficulties and strategies used by audiovisual translators to deal with rude language, among others. This section will serve as a convenient background for the second, descriptive part of the dissertation. In the second part of the thesis, I will analyse the treatment of rude language in the dubbing of an excerpt of the British television series, Peaky Blinders. In particular, I will focus on the translation of a small number of highly frequent words and expressions in English language films, such as fuck and its many derivatives. Methodologically, we will collect and prepare the scripts in both languages, we will track the different instances of the selected expressions in the English text, find out how they were rendered in Spanish and describe the translation strategy that was used by the translator. An Excell spreadsheet will be used to facilitate the work of collecting and annotating the data.

The culturally liminal narrative sub-genre of the family saga was born as a response to social crises, provoking a discourse in favour of family values, sometimes as a way of assessing the extent of social change, and attention to the quotidian, as historical change becomes part of both collective and individual experience (Edmond L. Caldwell). This comparative analysis of three contemporary family sagas that bear witness to the memories of a lineage during the twentieth century will allow for a feminist and decolonial study of their characters in their historical, political and social context. While Min Jin Lee's Pachinko (2017) and Susan Abulhawa's Mornings in Jenin (2010) -originally published in English by immigrants of Korean and Palestinian origin, respectively- present a subaltern and peripheral perspective, Palmeras en la nieve (2012) by Luz Gabás -a Spanish author- constitutes the point of view of a Spanish settler family during the occupation of Equatorial Guinea. Through critical texts (Kimberlé Crenshaw, Remei Sipi, Leila Ahmed, etc ) or other Korean, Palestinian or Guinean-Ecuadorian literary texts, the main aim of this thesis, in addition to examining in intersectional terms the important literary genre of the family saga in its aspect of «national allegory» (Fredric Jameson), is to look at the «violent task of comparing» (Magdalena Cámpora), through a specific lens, three works not previously compared with each other, between which a typological analogy is established because they belong to different cultural environments (Dionyz Durisin) while at the same time it is a genological comparison because they are framed in the narrative sub-genre of the family saga as a common cultural premise («Los géneros: genología», in Claudio Guillén's Entre lo uno y lo diverso).

This dissertation will primarily aim to provide an approach to terror literature in Galicia, focusing on short narratives. It will include a reflection on terror as a literary genre, its origins as a primary human emotion, and how it was expressed in literature. A personal classification of its subgenres will be developed in a more general manner -gothic, horror, cosmic, psychological or philosophical, religious horror, paranormal, splatter, and folkloric or traditional- in order to focus on the most commonly used by Galician authors, such as folkloric, religious horror, and paranormal. Next, the focus will shift to the different oral manifestations of Galician culture and their influence on the creation of a specific terror narrative in Galicia. For this, various stories by 20th-century authors, such as Ánxel Fole and Rafael Dieste, will be taken as references. With other authors like Alfonso Rodríguez Castelao and Vicente Risco, a subgenre of macabre literature based on the afterlife will be analyzed, which in this work will be referred to as the Galician culture of death. In conclusion, this dissertation aims to explore terror in Galician literature and to argue the existence of an autonomous literature through orality and cultural identity.

This study aims to analyze the geographical distribution of a dialectal variant characterized by the use of the morpheme -tes as a marker of number and person in the second person singular of the past perfect tense across the three verbal conjugations. The research focuses on delimiting the areas where this variant is used in the western part of the province of A Coruña and assessing its degree of persistence in the current linguistic context. The methodology combines individual interviews and mapping, with the goal of providing a detailed and updated representation of this verbal form, thereby contributing to the documentation of the dialectal diversity of Galician.

The first chapter examines Charles F. Hockett's design features proposal - a mainstay in the delimitation of human language - proposing other alternatives that take into accouunt its limitations. The second chapter highlights the contributions of primatologists such as Sue Savage Rumbaugh or Francine Patterson to the study of primate communication, demonstrating how their methodological approach desestabilises traditional hierarquies between human and animal. Finally, it defends the application of feminist methodologies from Eva Meijer's Philosophy of abandonment to investigate non human communicative systems, vindicating marginalized works in the discipline. This work aims to connect Linguistics with a gender perspective and Animal Studies, offering an alternative framework for the study of communication.

The main purpose of this research is to clarify the question of whether there are different linguistic practices according to gender. For this, taking as a study space the village of Xinzo de Limia, a qualitative type methodology was followed focusing on the linguistic attitudes presented by the sixteen-year-olds of I.E.S. Cidade de Antioquía. The sample selected consists of a total of twelve students, six of whom are boys and six girls; furthermore, the language used in selecting the students interviewed was taken into account; in each of the two groups, divided according to gender, three people speak Galician and three Spanish. Finally, several issues such as convergence situations, identity-language correlation or the possible appearance of prejudices were analysed, concluding that there are various linguistic trends which may vary according to gender.

Summary
The relationship between language and identity is an issue of great interest, especially in the context of the Galician youth sector, where both are in constant interaction and change. In this Bachelor's Thesis, three students from three different towns (Noia, Outes, and Santa Comba) aim to explore in our own municipalities the connection between language and Galician identity. To do this, over several months, we interviewed, using a qualitative approach, various people aged between 18 and 35, conversing with them, recording their voices, and drawing conclusions that allow us to extract relevant, informative data; getting closer to the real situation of these three municipalities and the meaning this sector attributes to Galician identity.

To do this, over several months, we interviewed, using a qualitative approach, various people aged between 18 and 35, conversing with them, recording their voices, and drawing conclusions that allow us to extract relevant, informative data; getting closer to the real situation of these three municipalities and the meaning this sector attributes to Galician identity.

Summary
The fashion world is an area where new words are used to describe trends, clothing and even style. These neologisms are mainly derived from borrowings from other languages. Thus, many Spanish and French fashion magazines have a large number of borrowings in their articles, especially a significant number of anglicisms to reach an international audience. Although the type of borrowing has changed over the years, following fashion trends, the use of anglicisms to designate the terms of fashion is a daily reality. The objective of this work is to analyze anglicisms in French and Spanish fashion during 2023. To do this, we analyzed different French fashion magazines (Marie Claire France, Harper’s Bazaar France, Vogue France, Numéro France, Elle France) and Spanish (Vogue Spain, Harper’s Bazaar Spain, Glamour Spain, Elle Spain) to try to see what types of anglicisms are used. Thus, from the contrastive analysis of these magazines, will be analyzed the different types of anglicisms, their influence and their assimilation in the host languages. We will then be able to establish the convergences and divergences between the two languages that are being analysed.

Speech acts play an essential role in communication, not only for conveying information, but also for carrying out actions. The aim of this work is to address the teaching/learning of the speech act of requesting in oral competence in FFL, both in production and reception. We will explore how FFL learners can master not only the at of formulating requests, but also of understanding those of their interlocutors. To achieve this, we propose a theoretical and practical approach based on the action approach, drawing on the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). First, we present the theory of speech acts from different perspectives in orther to introduce out object of study. The topic of this dissertation is OILE (Online Informal Learning of English) which, according to Stevens (2010: 2), can be defined as unstructured and generally unintentional learning 'resulting from activities of daily living related to work, family or leisure'. (Stevens, 2010, 12). Therefore, the study aims to understand how incidental use of online media can influence, including various digital tools and resources such as watching television series in their original version, listening to English music on demand, and social networks with other English-speaking users the process of self-directed language learning. It also aims to provide insight into the changing landscape of language education, exploring the pedagogical implications. The thesis will consist of two general sections: The first section will present a comprehensive review of the literature on OILE in order to establish the theoretical framework and explore practical applications for English language teaching. The second section will present the results of a survey carried out among two different age groups: those under eighteen years of age and those over sixty years of age. The purpose of the survey is to investigate the preferences, experiences and obstacles of these age groups when it comes to using Internet media for self-directed learning of English as a foreign language. The research aims to provide a comprehensive explanation of how age can influence the use and effectiveness of Internet media in learning English as a foreign language by comparing the attitudes and responses of these two groups.

War literature has traditionally been approached from perspectives close to historiography or epic, perpetuating a static and elitist image of war and contributing to the exaltation of the hero figure. This analysis proposes a comparative study of the works by Rosa Aneiros, Sol de Inverno (2009), and Han Kang, Human Acts (2018), in it spanish translation by Sunme Yoon. The central theme of this analysis is the treatment of pain through the framework proposed in 2003 by Susan Sontag in Regarding the Pain of Others. A change in the paradigm of war literature will be observed, where a more intimate and subjective vision opts to give the voice to the victims of violent chapters of history, often silenced or manipulated by institutions and the media. The choice of these works allows not only to notice the changes in the literary landscape and their possible links to female authorship and other recent historical events, but also explores the emotional dimension in war narratives, focusing on how the experience of pain is captured and transmitted to reach a transcultural and cross-border understanding of human suffering. Furthermore, it will reflect on the power of literature not only as a tool for denunciation but also as a space for mourning and collective memory.

Summary
The arrival of people from Galicia to Lisbon dates back approximately 500 years, but it was more specifically from the 18th century onwards that the highest peaks of migration were recorded. In their settlement and adaptation to the local environment, Galician men and women took on harsh jobs and gradually began to cluster in certain guilds such as water carriers, tavern keepers, or coal merchants earning collective respect and becoming deeply embedded in Lisbons daily life over decades. Traces of their presence can still be found today throughout the citys geography, beyond the more discreet and occasional contemporary appearances. Although these may serve an informative role, this work aims to identify and analyze those traces through research in different sources, preferably historical and literary, regarding the Galician groups who arrived in the urban core and its surroundings. We will consider their numbers, origins, traditions, festive customs, and ways of remaining over the years. At the same time, beyond assessing the impact and endurance of their memory in this area of the neighboring country, we aim to better understand the various situations and circumstances that led so many Galicians to emigrate to Lisbon. This archaeology of Galician emotional memory in Lisbon will ultimately allow us to better understand the present reality of this space through its past, and perhaps explain its ongoing significance for Galicia, both now and in the future.

This Bachelor's Thesis aims to examine the presence and dissemination of the Italian language beyond national borders, focusing on both native speakers and enthusiasts of the language, as well as Italian emigrants and their descendants. Starting with a historical and linguistic overview of Italian emigration, the study will also address the phenomenon of new migration flows, particularly those involving Italian citizens with medium to high levels of education commonly referred to as the brain drain. In addition, the research will consider the more recent phenomenon of transit migration, involving so called new Italians, i.e., citizens of foreign origin who have acquired Italian nationality through jus sanguinis or prolonged residence in Italy. To develop this TFG, a range of academic publications on the linguistic history of migration will be consulted. Additionally, reference will be made to the international conference organized by the University of Perugia entitled Italian outside of Italy today: A look at the varieties in emigrant repertoires. As for the contrastive analysis component, selected examples from the relevant academic literature will be adapted to the Galician context. In conclusion, this research aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current presence of the Italian community abroad, with particular emphasis on Spain and to explore the ways in which these expatriates seek to maintain a connection with their cultural roots, especially through the preservation of their original linguistic variety.

Eugenio Montale (Genoa 1896, Milan 1981), one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century and Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1975, is known in Italy and abroad mainly for his poetic works, but he also carried out significant work as a literary and music critic, journalist, and translator. Fuori di casa (Ricciardi, 1969; Mondadori, 1975) is, after the short story collection Farfalla di Dinard (Neri e Pozza, 1956), his second book of imaginative prose, in which the author gathers accounts of trips he took between 1946 and 1964, originally published in the Corriere d’Informazione and Corriere della Sera. These pieces represent a collection of experiences and reports he produced abroad as a journalist and correspondent for the two newspapers. Our final thesis project, after an initial exploration of the author's life and works, aims to explore the themes and forms through which, in the travel accounts focused on England and France in Fuori di casa, the author celebrates modernity and technological progress while also highlighting the potential negative consequences such as the loss of identity and values, and the alienation of the individual. The goal is also to investigate whether, in this diary of life experiences, an ambivalent attitude toward the advent of modernity and the changes that accompany this process emerges.

Women’s life in the nineteenth century was extremely challenging, as it was marked by social, economic and legal restrictions that, one the one hand, prevented them from having many legal rights and, on the other, relegated them to the private sphere, imposing on them attributes such as purity and submission. Within an extremely hierarchical society, women’s opportunities for education, property ownership and free expression were minimal. However, some women gradually began to actively challenge social expectations. Consequently, due to society’s fear of change and transgression, these women started to be considered “irrational” or “insane”. The literature of the time only contributed to reinforce these ideas, depicting transgressive women as problematic and, by extension, as a danger to social welfare. My aim in this dissertation is to understand how this “madness” serves not only as a way of punishing female characters in their pursuit of agency and sexual pleasure, but also seems to be an omen of what is yet come: a change in society concerning women, a sign of women’s capabilities which the first feminist movements would vindicate. To serve this purpose, some key authors from this period will be examined, aiming at critically discussing their representation of women’s insanity, as is the case of Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Kate Chopin or Wilkie Collins.

This Bachelor´s Thesis focuses on the analysis of certain synonymous words in Galician, some of which diverge from Spanish, such as bágoa or gorxa, and others that coincide, like lágrima or garganta. The introduction outlines the study´s objectives (primarily determining whether there is a diaphasic distribution among the analyzed synonym pairs), as well as the methodology used and the general structure of the work. First, the study presents an overview of sociolinguistic lexical variation, particularly diaphasic variation, and how it is marked in Galician dictionaries. Next, it introduces the selection criteria for the synonym pairs under analysis and compiles the research corpus. Throughout the analysis, the chosen synonym pairs are examined using specific criteria, including frequency of use in written texts and dialectal databases. This is further complemented by a survey designed to explore diaphasic variation among current speakers. The survey methodology, respondent characterization, obtained results, and subsequent discussion are all presented. Finally, the study concludes with findings derived from the analysis. This dissertation aims to examine major conventions and subversive strategies operating in Gothic literature. As such, the Gothic appeared in the eighteenth century and yet, it has consistently evolved and its conventions permeate a vast number of fictional works and other aesthetic products since then. The Gothic is often characterized by the creation of suspense and fear, horror and terror, which seems to either represent or warn against the main anxieties of a particular historical period, ranging from political conflicts in Europe, shifts in gender roles, and scientific discoveries during the Enlightenment and the Regency, to name just a few, which defines the Gothic as a historically-situated narrative. To serve this purpose, this dissertation will be informed by seminal critical works on the Gothic, as is the case of Fred Botting’s Gothic (1995), which addresses gothic conventions from the genre’s inception with Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto (1764) as well as its most relevant transformations in later centuries, as is the case of Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897). First, this dissertation will provide an insight into the main features of the Gothic genre, as well as a brief chronology. Most importantly, this dissertation will also focus on some prominent Gothic works, paying special attention to Gothic strategies such as transgression, power relations, gender roles, the sublime and the thrill of awe-inspiring passions and threats, the irrational, and the fantastic.

This study aims to examine the evolution of some rural elements in Galicia and Ireland from a comparative point of view, bearing in mind the cultural similarities shared by both territories, through the works of one author from Ireland and another one from Galicia: Walk the Blue Fields (2008) and Foster (2022), written by Claire Keegan; and Que non te aten (2016) and Os soños de Miguel (2022), by Manuel Iglesias Turnes. Both authors create realistic fiction based on the rural world through which we can observe contemporary rurality in each territory. This idea of contemporaneity is based on two main aspects: on the one hand, the world depicted in the works (from the 1970s onwards), and on the other hand, the publication year: both from the 21st century. Hence, I am going to provide a theoretical frame in which there will be a survey of the evolution of rurality in Irish and Galician literatures, which will be based on the studies of scholars such as Vilavedra, Requeixo or Nogueira, as well as Leersen, Hallisy, Foster or Even-Zohar. Afterwards, this essay is going to be sectioned in two main parts: rural culture and tradition, and human rural characters. In the first case, the main topics of research are going to be rural spaces, cultural elements (language, religion and death, traditions and superstition) and agriculture and farming by following the study of these subjects by intellectuals as Beecher, Smyth or Freire Esparís, among others. Secondly, rural human characters are going to be addressed from a gender perspective, bearing in mind the distribution of tasks and spaces and taking the studies of Bacik, Da Col, Inma Otero, Marta González or Lourdes Méndez on this matter as a basis for this analysis. Finally, conclusions are going to be deduced from the previous research in order to establish a series of specific comparisons regarding rurality in both corpora.

The first aim of this project is to clarify the main source of the comedy El pastor fido, elaborated through the collaborative work of the seventeenth-century playwrights Solís, Coello and Calderón. This will be based on a comparative study between Guarini's Il pastor fido (1590), the ultimate origin of the collaborative comedy, and the two Spanish translations which, because of their date of publication (1602, 1609), could have been read by our authors. As a second purpose, a comparison of the work with its main source will be made in order to establish which aspects have been maintained or slightly modified and which of them do not come from that source. The relations of the novel elements with the main source or with other sources that may have mediated the work will be systematically established, paying special attention to the origin of the comic elements and the evolution of the moral lesson. Consideration will also be given to the possible influence that other works may have had on the comedy.

To this end, four sonnets by key authors will be examined, and through a comparative analysis, the different perspectives each writer offers on this tragic love story will be studied. The focus will be on how the myth is adapted to the Renaissance ideals of harmony and balance, as well as to the disillusionment and fatalism characteristic of the Baroque period. This study examines the challenges of teaching English as a second language to learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), i.e. those that can affect a (young) learner’s ability to learn. SEND may affect their social behaviour, but also their cognitive skills, their ability to read and write (e.g. dyslexia) or their concentration levels (e.g. attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHS). The theoretical part will deal with topics related to the needs of these pupils in learning a second language. Among the questions which will be addressed we can mention the issue of inclusion (whether these children should be in the same class as the rest of the pupils or if, on the contrary, segregation is more effective). Another has to do with teacher training: the great majority of EFL teachers argue that there are not enough courses to train them with the necessary resources to teach children with learning difficulties. A third issue is related with the attitudes of EFL school teachers regarding the inclusion of pupils with SEND in mainstream classrooms. If time permits, the practical part will include: (1) the results of a survey carried out in order to gather teachers’ opinions on the topic; and (2) an analysis of the methods applied in an English curriculum accommodation plan.

This paper offers a detailed analysis of the appearances of messengers in Homer’s Odyssey, considering both gods and mortals in their role as bearers of messages, intermediaries, or facilitators of communication. Their interventions throughout the text are examined, along with their relevance to the narrative development and their impact on the plot and characters. Furthermore, the study draws a parallel with the Iliad, also attributed to Homer, where the figure of the messenger, especially those of divine nature, such as the goddess Iris, appears more frequently and actively. This contrast highlights the differences between the two epics: while the Iliad reflects a war context with constant interaction between gods and humans, the Odyssey focuses on a personal journey, where cunning, waiting, and individual destiny prevail. As previously mentioned, a particular aspect of the analysis focuses on the absence of Iris in the Odyssey, a notable fact given her usual role as divine messenger in other works. Instead, Hermes assumes this function, which may be interpreted as a significant shift in how the divine relates to the human in this narrative. This omission is addressed from a narrative and symbolic perspective, also considering possible stylistic or ideological reasons behind this authorial choice.

For many decades, American sitcoms have been a widely watched genre with a significant cultural impact globally. They have been particularly well received in Spain, where audiovisual translators played a crucial role in their success. A defining element of this type of genre is humour, which, at the same time, poses a difficult challenge for the translator. Although there are some shared cultural elements that facilitate the translation from English into Spanish, there are other cultural variances that complicate the process of translation. To overcome these obstacles, dubbing and subtitling translators employ different techniques owing to their different backgrounds in translation modalities. The main aim of this thesis is to find out the strategies employed in tackling the challenges of translating humour in sitcoms. The methodology involves a comparative analysis of some episodes of the popular sitcom Modern Family (2009) in the source language (English) and their dubbed and subtitled versions in Spanish. The broad variety of humor ranging from everyday situations to particular cultural topics contributed to the selection of this specific sitcom. It also features characters such as Gloria Delgado Pritchett, a Colombian woman who struggles with speaking English in an American environment; who makes the process of translation even more challenging and interesting. In order to explain the key concepts in the theoretical framework, previous studies of translators such as Peter Newmark, Margherita Dore or Amparo Hurtado will be reviewed. This dissertation will consist of two main parts. The first one will address fundamental concepts, for instance, the specific modality of audiovisual translation; the definition of humour, its typology, the challenges it poses for translators and the tools used to preserve the humorous effect for the target audience. The second one will take a more practical approach in which the analysis of the selected chapters of the show will illustrate the techniques employed in the dubbed and subtitled Spanish versions.

Dissident individuals experience a different kind of growth than those who grow up within the boundaries of mainstream society; their self-awareness is not framed by typical stages of maturity but emerges through contact with role models who challenge social norms. This issue is explored through La mala costumbre (2023) by Alana S. Portero and Las malas (2019) by Camila Sosa Villada, novels in which two women discover their transvestite identity as they come into contact with queer life in Madrid (Spain) and Córdoba (Argentina). Social class, queer communities, perceptions of large cities through their marginal spaces, and the violence that accompanies these experiences are all elements that traverse both autofictional novels. Due to its recent publication, La mala costumbre does not yet have an established critical tradition, apart from reviews and commentary published in magazines and cultural supplements. In the case of Las malas, although it has only been on the market for about five years, it already has a significant academic critical tradition. The relevance of this proposed study lies in it being the first comparative analysis of both novels within a transatlantic framework; more specifically, the focus is on identity construction and the coming-of-age phenomenon as experienced through encounters with queer realities. Some of the key analytical issues include the concept of trans community, the relationship between social class and queer narratives, the growth process from a marginalized standpoint, the link between (camp) aesthetics and identity, and sex work from a transfeminist perspective.

Summary
This essay will analyze how the Hispanic cultural community is addressing the myth of Atlantis in the 21st century, both in literary and audiovisual media. The project is divided into three parts. The first will present the origin of the myth of Atlantis from its first appearance in Plato's Timaeus to the present day, briefly explaining its evolution over time. Second, the appearance of the myth of Atlantis in Hispanic literature will be studied, using Mauricio Chaves Mesén's Caballeros de Nostradamus VI. El Oráculo de la Atlántida as a basis for the analysis, which will serve as a starting point for observing the fictional universe surrounding the myth of Atlantis. Finally, the differences encountered with the incorporation of the myth into new audiovisual media will be discussed, drawing on the work of explorer Jesús Camacho and his contributions to various podcasts. This will allow us to observe the more informative role that the myth of Atlantis takes on in the new media.
This essay will analyze how the Hispanic cultural community is addressing the myth of Atlantis in the 21st century, both in literary and audiovisual media. The project is divided into three parts. The first will present the origin of the myth of Atlantis from its first appearance in Plato's Timaeus to the present day, briefly explaining its evolution over time. Second, the appearance of the myth of Atlantis in Hispanic literature will be studied, using Mauricio Chaves Mesén's Caballeros de Nostradamus VI. El Oráculo de la Atlántida as a basis for the analysis, which will serve as a starting point for observing the fictional universe surrounding the myth of Atlantis. Finally, the differences encountered with the incorporation of the myth into new audiovisual media will be discussed, drawing on the work of explorer Jesús Camacho and his contributions to various podcasts. This will allow us to observe the more informative role that the myth of Atlantis takes on in the new media.

This study aims to identify and address challenges in English pronunciation among primary school learners in Spain, exploring potential solutions through Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) applications. Building on prior research that supports the efficacy of CAPT in language learning, this study will assess the characteristics of available digital apps that can be used to such effect in comparison to e-ProFun (English Pronunciation is Fun) currently being developed by USC scholars. The evaluation will cover effectiveness, usability, and student engagement, aiming to identify their advantages and limitations. Regarding methodology, the approach adopted is mixed, featuring an evaluation grid for the evaluation of CAPT apps already mentioned, in combination with a teacher questionnaire to gather insights on existing teaching practices, the frequency and extent of app use, and opinions on pronunciation challenges. In addition to implications for research in such field as CAPT and, more generally, TELL (Technology Enhanced Language Learning), this investigation will also have practical implications, providing schools with data-driven recommendations for integrating effective digital tools like e-ProFun. This can lead to improved language learning outcomes and support educators in making informed decisions about adopting educational technology for teaching pronunciation.

In the 21st century, marked by the use of new technologies, it is necessary to modernise teaching so as not to lose students' motivation. For this reason, this research explores the integration of gamification and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the teaching of French as a Foreign Language (FLE). By combining this more modern perspective, this project aims to create a teaching unit focused on learning vocabulary and everyday expressions about “life in the city”. To achieve this, digital tools such as Canva and Padlet will be used to create interactive and dynamic activities that will allow students to develop a knowledge of French in everyday urban situations. In addition, elements of French culture will be integrated into these activities to enable cultural immersion and thus enrich learning. The work aims to highlight the benefits of gamification in foreign languages, and more specifically in FLE. Indeed, it seems that the use of ludic elements in teaching helps to stimulate students' motivation and improve their academic results. We will present elements that will show that gamification and ICT offer pedagogical benefits, while being able to be integrated in a complementary way to more traditional methods.

In recent years, drag performance and its intersections with queer identity, gender non-conformity, and trans visibility have gained increasing scholarly attention within cultural and gender studies. This dissertation aims to explore the historical and cultural evolution of drag, examining how it has been performed, perceived, and mediated across different contexts and media. The study begins with a theoretical framework that introduces key concepts such as drag, cross dressing, gender identity or gender expression, which will serve as foundational tools for the analysis as well as some of the implications that the art form of drag has, its different dissertations and some issues that drag springs among feminist theorists. From this theoretical base, the dissertation traces a chronological overview of drag performance, beginning in the 19th century with figures like William Dorsey Swann, recognized as the first drag queen and pioneer of cross-dressing balls, and Annie Hindle, the first recorded male impersonator in theatrical settings. The emergence of Vaudeville in the early 20th century brought greater visibility to gender performance through artists like Julian Eltinge, while the mid-to-late 20th century saw the rise of ballroom culture, personified by iconic figures such as Crystal LaBeija, prominently featured in the documentary Paris Is Burning. The analysis then turns to the incorporation of drag into cinematic culture, particularly through the work of Divine in John Waters' films, and culminates with the mainstream success of RuPaul, whose long-running Emmy-winning show RuPaul’s Drag Race has brought drag into the global spotlight. Humor is one of the great identity markers of a society. The humorous representation of a nation determines not only how outsiders perceive them but also how that social group perceives itself. This phenomenon expands significantly with the advent of mass media and, more specifically, with the arrival of television. It is at this moment that sitcoms and stand-up comedy emerge, turning humor into a channel for expression and representation of the Galician community. In this study, I will conduct a thorough analysis of humor from a dual perspective: pragmatic and linguistic. First, I will examine the mechanisms and discursive strategies involved in the construction of humor, paying special attention to the linguistic, semantic, and pragmatic resources used to create comedy. I will focus on how context, communicative intention, and audience interaction influence the interpretation of humorous discourse. To do so, I will base my analysis on studies about stand-up comedy as a discourse type (Ruiz Gurillo, 2013) and on the pragmatic labeling of systems and components of humorous discourse (Ruiz Gurillo, 2023). To explore these aspects, I will analyze a performance by the comedy duo Mucha e Nucha, examining in detail the different linguistic procedures used to provoke laughter. Additionally, I will study concepts such as irony, retranca, sarcasm, hyperbole, and other devices that contribute to humor creation.

In her novels Cicatriz (2015) and Un amor (2020), power dynamics form a central theme and are evident in the characters’ interpersonal and sexual relationships, demonstrating the existence of hierarchies that affect individuals and their connections. This project aims to offer a literary analysis of these novels, studying how they reflect the complexity of sexuality, particularly female sexuality, and of concepts such as “consent” and “desire,” without overlooking the power relations present in these contexts. Thus, the study will examine the characters and their relationships, as well as analyze specific passages that illustrate these issues. In addition, it will assess the reception of the novels by readers in order to determine whether these forms of violence are recognized by the public or, on the contrary, are naturalized and misinterpreted. Through the analysis of all these elements, this work seeks to highlight the role of literature as evidence of the existence of current social issues related to sex, violence, and power.

The purpose of this work is to explain the different toponyms found in the municipality of Vedra. It will start from the name of the municipality, following through the different parishes and villages. Following the “Nomenclátor de Galicia”, the analysis will deal with a total of 12 parishes and around 140 villages. The first part will consist of an introduction with the most important data and information of the municipality of Vedra. Part of the analysis aims to achieve the transparency of all toponyms. For this, an etymological analysis of each toponym will be carried out in alphabetical order. For older people and when it is considered appropriate, the frequency of a toponym in relation to the Galician territory will also be discussed (if it is very common or if it is unique...). Historical information taken from directories such as CODOLGA, TMILGa, ACS, AHUS or PARES will be included where it will be possible to check, for example, if the toponym has undergone any changes in its name. An analysis of the names of possessors can also be found in the body of the work. Based on visits to the villages, those data that are relevant and important for the transparency of some toponym will be included. Finally, a conclusion will be made where a semantic classification and another relative to the origin can be found.

This Final Degree Project explores the concept of love in La Princesse de Clèves, beginning with an analysis of how historical and literary contexts influence the development of the novel. La Princesse de Clèves, a novel written by Madame de Lafayette, was published in 1678 during the classical period. However, the story takes place at the court of Henry II and highlights the tensions between personal feelings and the societal expectations of the time in which it was published. This project will examine how the Counter-Reformation and Jansenism, with their principles of moral rigor, virtue, and renunciation, influence the decisions of Madame de Clèves. Préciosité and classicism, two major literary movements of the 17th century, are also analyzed to understand how the characters' feelings are portrayed. Next, this study will focus on analyzing romantic feelings on several levels: their representation in the context of the 17th century French court, where appearences and hypocrisy prevail; the contraste between real love and idealized love, focusing on the main characters of the work; and the different stages of love the protagonist experiences. This study will analyze the evolution of the princess of Clèves, as well as the different emotions and sensations she goes through: infidelity, regret, guilt, and renunciation. Thus, the project will highlight the novel's pessimistic vision, where love is often associated with suffering, sacrifice, and the renunciation of the characters, leading to illness and death.

This work aims to know and disseminate the life and work of Anisia Miranda, a prominent figure in Galician and universal literature, especially in Latin America. The choice of this research topic is justified by the need to recognize and value the contribution of Anisia Miranda to Galician literature, in a social context where women writers have been made invisible for being the wives of prestigious writers. Through this study, it is intended to highlight their contribution to literature and preservation of the Galician language. The research closes with analysing the life and literary trajectory of the author, from her early years of life to her consolidation as a writer. For this reason, the study addresses his training, literary influences and the main works that marked his career. Thus, it examines the historical and cultural context in which his work was developed, as well as his relationship with other writers and literary movements. To this end, methods of literary and historical analysis will be used for the study of Miranda's works, as well as interviews (inside and outside Galicia) and bibliographic reviews to understand her impact and legacy.

Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria are two of the most important monarchs of the United Kingdom. Even though there is more than a century separating them, we can find many similarities both in their public and private spheres. They are the longest-lasting monarchs of the country but they also have a private side that has been overlooked or obscured with inaccurate information. With this comparative analysis, I would like to focus on the decisions and challenges they took and faced while they ruling. Another central point would be their differences regarding the historical period they lived in. For this dissertation, it is important to also take a glimpse at their private life and, therefore, to their role as daughters, mothers and wives. After this, it is necessary to establish a connection between their public and private life, analysing how their personal experiences influenced their responsibilities. Finally, it is important to tackle their legacy and the impact they had on their respective societies in order to account for the iconic popular role they played. The methodology to be used includes a close reading of the most authorised biographies of both queens as well as other sources which may shed more light on the matter. The analysis will be illustrated with the most relevant quotes from the sources. with this study, to female monarchs who might seem unrelated by the time gap are brought together considering the paramount popularity they enjoyed in their own times.

Another central point would be their differences regarding the historical period they lived in. For this dissertation, it is important to also take a glimpse at their private life and, therefore, to their role as daughters, mothers and wives. After this, it is necessary to establish a connection between their public and private life, analysing how their personal experiences influenced their responsibilities. Finally, it is important to tackle their legacy and the impact they had on their respective societies in order to account for the iconic popular role they played. The methodology to be used includes a close reading of the most authorised biographies of both queens as well as other sources which may shed more light on the matter. The analysis will be illustrated with the most relevant quotes from the sources. with this study, to female monarchs who might seem unrelated by the time gap are brought together considering the paramount popularity they enjoyed in their own times.

This final work will first analyze the role of language academies and the media as linguistic agents, and then analyze the relationship between both agents as such. This relationship can be approached from two directions, the influence of the media on the development of the norm or the influence of the norm on the use of the language by the media. In this analysis, the second perspective will be chosen, with the aim of identifying whether the media take on board the recommendations of the language academies and whether, therefore, they contribute to the dissemination of the norm. As is well known, over the past few decades, social media has played a significant role in the lives of young people worldwide, and its influence continues to grow with the constant emergence of new platforms and trends that make younger generations be increasingly immersed in them. One of the most prevalent features when it comes to social media discourse is the frequent use of slang, which comprises the expression that is generally not found in formal contexts of use or accepted as part of the standard by educated speakers of the language (cf. De Klerk, 2005). The main objective of this dissertation is to analyze the use of current slang on social media discourse, primarily on TikTok, and its impact on the vocabulary and way of expression of young native English speakers, as well as of those who learn English as a Second/Foreign Language (ESL/EFL). The study will begin with a brief introduction to the world of social media, its advantages and potential risks, and its role in the propagation of new linguistic forms, followed by a detailed explanation of what slang is and its relevance from a sociolinguistic point of view. Additionally, a practical study will be included in which a glossary of emerging linguistic slang terms used by young people on social media will be provided, along with an explanation of how they have arisen, whether they can be ascribed to specific social groups, and the potential semantic changes that the words may have gone through. Digital Language Learning (DLL) increases accessibility and flexibility in language education. It provides personalised learning experiences enhanced with interactive features such as gamification and multimedia, making language learning immersive and culturally enriching. DLL is particularly useful for pronunciation instruction, addressing challenges that traditional methods often overlook. Pronunciation is crucial in language acquisition, yet teaching it effectively remains challenging in Spanish secondary schools. Integrating digital tools into pronunciation instruction offers promising improvements. Computer-Assisted Pronunciation Training (CAPT) tools have proven valuable by offering interactive feedback and practice that traditional settings often lack. This TFG aims to assess e-SoundWayFR (e-SoundWay Free Roaming), a gamified digital application designed to improve English pronunciation among Spanish-speaking secondary school students. This dissertation examines how e-SoundWayFR addresses students’ pronunciation challenges and provides tools to overcome them. The project begins with an analysis of the current state of English pronunciation instruction in Spanish secondary schools, including an overview of educational regulations regarding pronunciation teaching and the materials currently in use. Following this, a comparative analysis of various CAPT tools and e-SoundWayFR will allow us to identify their characteristics and the dimensions that should be targeted to address teachers' and students’ needs in secondary education. Tentatively, through semi-structured interviews and questionnaires, another dimension of the analysis could involve the examination of instructors’ perceptions on EFL (pronunciation) teaching practices, as well as their users’ experiences and those of learners after testing e-SoundWayFR, thereby contributing valuable insights into how digital tools can support language acquisition and enhance phonological awareness at that educational level.

This undergraduate thesis aims to delve into the reception of Baroque theatre during the first half of the 18th century. Specifically, it will focus on the figure of Pedro Calderón de la Barca and the reasons behind the success of his comedies both on stage and in print during the first half of the century; this fame would decline in the second half of the century following the rise of Enlightenment policies, particularly in the final decades of the 1700s. To illustrate this shift, the study will examine the play El jardín de Falerina, a two-act comedy that falls within the genre of sung comedy, written by Pedro Calderón de la Barca in the 17th century for its premiere at the Casa de la Zarzuela in 1649. The play also enjoyed great success in the theatres of La Cruz and El Príncipe throughout the following century. The piece was transmitted through various witnesses in the 17th century and reached the 18th century primarily through ediciones sueltas. Among these, the one held at the Municipal Historical Library of Madrid under the reference Tea 1-39-8, b, is particularly noteworthy, as it shows signs of having been used in an 18th-century performance. In summary, one of the main features of the particular loose edition that concerns us (an edition with several recorded performance dates) is the appearance of multiple passages that were removed and rewritten using so-called banderillas. By comparing this suelta with earlier versions of the play, this study seeks to identify the reasons behind these changes and to determine whether they were indeed a response to the Enlightenment censorship that prevailed in the mid-18th century.

Dictionaries of doubts have been an effective tool for solving the linguistic hesitations of speakers since the 18th century and, after the publication of various lexicons of this type, such as Manuel Seco's Diccionario de dudas y dificultades de la lengua española (1961), 2005 saw the publication of a work that would become a key repertoire in the field of Spanish lexicography: the Diccionario panhispánico de dudas (DPD), by ASALE and RAE. Twenty years later, the transformation of the idiomatic habits of Spanish speakers and the publication of other fundamental works related to the Spanish standard made clear the urgent need for renewal. This paper aims to offer an analysis of the lexical additions that have been included in the second edition of the DPD (published in 2025). To this end, it will first offer a preliminary inventory of the main changes observed between the two editions of this repertory (and, therefore, a brief allusion will be made to the deletions and modifications attested). Subsequently, the analysis will focus on the additions, the central theme of the paper, and the possible causes that have led to the incorporation of the terms discussed will be noted, based on the research carried out in other lexicographical repertoires, such as the Diccionario de la lengua española or the Diccionario del español actual, as well as in different corpus (in particular CORPES) or the consultations made on the Twitter account @RAEinforma, through the use of the hashtag #dudaRAE. Finally, in the conclusions, a synthesis of the results obtained in this work will be offered.

Realism and Modernism are two important literary periods within English literature covering the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, respectively. Even though realist and modernist works have formal and stylistic differences which could apparently result in two antithetical movements, both focus on the social and psychological transformation of the individual. In fact, when mentioning the social and realistic representation of society, British writers Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf are key to moulding new subjectivities, despite their apparent differences and their inscription in seemingly antithetical literary movements, as is the case of Realism and Modernism, respectively. However, both Austen and Woolf produced relevant contributions in their respective exploration of the role of women in culture and tensions between the private and public realm. The main objective of this dissertation is to analyse the significance of both Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf within Realism and Modernism, respectively, in order to examine points of encounter between both writers and to explore their cultural imprint. Some of the aspects to be covered in this comparative analysis include social criticism, literary influences and stylistic features in some of their most relevant works, examined from a gender perspective.

Clive Staples Lewis, also known as C.S Lewis, is an lrish-British author. One of his most representative works is the saga of The Chronicles of Narnia, of which I will analyse the first two books The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia. Lewis was inspired by lrish folklore and myth to create this world full of colour and magical creatures. The main objectives of this work are to analyse the human-animal relationships present in Lewis's work. In the world of Narnia, we can find both kind and evil animals, talking or mute, but they all have a specific role and different types of relationships are developed with the few humans that appear in these two novels. One of the most important and symbolic animals in them is Aslan, the lion, who is the creator of Narnia and who establishes the strongest human-animal relationships. Furthermore, we will contextualise the analysis of the human-animal figurations by referring to the components of lrish folklore present in the novels, as well as the crucial events in lrish history. The methodology used for the analysis of these issues will consist of theoretical approaches to human-animal studies, as in the book Animals and Society: An lntroduction to Human-Animal Studies by Margo DeMello. Regarding lrish folklore, some important references include Saga and Myth in Ancient lreland by Gerad Murphy and Writings on lrish Folklore, Legend, and Myth by W. B. Yeats.

In the second half of the 13th century, the Castilian monarch Alfonso X the Wise (1221-1284) undoubtedly carried out one of the greatest literary and cultural projects in medieval Europe: the Cantigas de Santa María. Four manuscripts (To, T, E, and F) have survived to us, and for Galician-Portuguese culture and society, they are endowed with significant historical value not only because they represent Alfonsine ideals but also because their pages are imbued with the essence of our medieval tradition. Consisting of more than four hundred lyrical compositions, this work compiles and presents, in verse, a series of miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary collected in various places on the Iberian Peninsula and throughout Europe. However, the work as a whole also contains sections in prose, which will be the subject of study in this paper. The corpus will consist of forty-one cantigas from the Rico Codex (T), from cantiga 153 to 194. Their respective legends and rubrics will be selected, and multiple editions of them will be produced, with five proposals corresponding to as many perspectives on the cultural materials present in them, including philological ones as well as those of interest to the other humanities and social sciences. The multi-editorial instances and the respective approaches will be specifically oriented to paleographic variation (including allographic, brachygraphic and punctuation variation), graphematic, phonological, morpho-syntactical, lexical, literary and historical-cultural variation in general. The edition will be preceded by a presentation of the editing criteria, using a critical approach, sensitive to the various aspects relevant to understanding the texts and the circumstances in which they were created. The linguistic study will prioritize the analysis of Castilianisms and Galician-Portugueseisms (in Spanish prose) and will also attempt to introduce the perspective of medieval diatopic variation, based on some variants that might shed light on the geographical origins of some of the authors who collaborated in the production of the cantigas within the framework of Alfonsine writing. Finally, an index of the graphic forms (tokens) of the corpus will be developed, based on the multi-editorial Conservative Interpretive framework, and will be easily searchable.

However, the work as a whole also contains sections in prose, which will be the subject of study in this paper. The corpus will consist of forty-one cantigas from the Rico Codex (T), from cantiga 153 to 194. Their respective legends and rubrics will be selected, and multiple editions of them will be produced, with five proposals corresponding to as many perspectives on the cultural materials present in them, including philological ones as well as those of interest to the other humanities and social sciences. The multi-editorial instances and the respective approaches will be specifically oriented to paleographic variation (including allographic, brachygraphic and punctuation variation), graphematic, phonological, morpho-syntactical, lexical, literary and historical-cultural variation in general. The edition will be preceded by a presentation of the editing criteria, using a critical approach, sensitive to the various aspects relevant to understanding the texts and the circumstances in which they were created. The linguistic study will prioritize the analysis of Castilianisms and Galician-Portugueseisms (in Spanish prose) and will also attempt to introduce the perspective of medieval diatopic variation, based on some variants that might shed light on the geographical origins of some of the authors who collaborated in the production of the cantigas within the framework of Alfonsine writing. Finally, an index of the graphic forms (tokens) of the corpus will be developed, based on the multi-editorial Conservative Interpretive framework, and will be easily searchable.

At times distanced from the cultural prestige enjoyed by other literary genres, detective fiction has nonetheless sparked the interest of many renowned authors. Its growth throughout the 20th century has led to the emergence of diverse uses and manifestations that have only served to enrich a genre that has achieved great popular success. In Argentine literature, prominent figures such as Bioy Casares, Borges, and Rodolfo Walsh have explored detective fiction. However, Ricardo Piglia (1941-2017) may have been one of the authors who worked most extensively with the genre in the country, both through his involvement with the “Serie Negra” and in his prose and theoretical writings. This study begins with a general overview of the genre’s evolution and then focuses on its place within Argentine literature. This paper aims to study and systematize, through the analysis of three narrative works, the phenomenon of the transition of three canonical authors of Galician Children's and Young Adult Literature (CYAL), Xabier P. Docampo, Agustín Fernández Paz, and Fina Casalderrey, towards adult fiction beginning in the second decade of the 21st century. It presents an expository overview of each author's literary trajectory within the field of CYAL, contextualized within the socio-political and cultural framework of Galicia in the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. Likewise, a detailed analysis is provided of the three selected works: A viaxe de Gagarin (2014) by Agustín Fernández Paz; A nena do abrigo de astracán (2017) by Xabier P. Docampo; and A muller xabaril (2023) by Fina Casalderrey, focusing particularly on shared technical and thematic aspects, as well as on the critical and reader reception of the novels. The study also outlines the systemic-literary parameters underlying the decision of these three authors, members of the so-called Lamote Generation, to shift toward adult literature, as well as the socio-cultural and economic changes that influenced the evolution of their narrative projects.

The main objective of this Final Degree Project (TFG) is to explore and analyze from a historical and literary perspective the novel La mujer habitada (1988) by Gioconda Belli, a Nicaraguan writer whose work is deeply marked by her political commitment and her connection to her homeland, Managua. The first part of this study examines the context in which the novel emerged, with special attention to the sociopolitical tensions that affected the country during the Somoza dictatorship (from 1936 to 1979). It also addresses the author's trajectory and her involvement with the Nicaraguan revolutionary movement, the Sandinista National Liberation Front, as well as the impact of her personal and political experience on her literary production. The central focus of the work is the literary analysis of La mujer habitada, structured around four key elements: the narrator, space, time, and characters. The use of language and narrative strategies employed by Belli will be examined, along with the construction of both physical and symbolic space, and the way in which the alternation between different temporal planes influences the structure of the novel and the interaction between its protagonists. A detailed study of the main characters will also be carried out, focusing in particular on Lavinia's development and the presence of Itzá as a link between the indigenous past and the contemporary revolutionary struggle. Finally, the conclusions will present the results obtained throughout the project, which will be complemented by the bibliography used during its elaboration.

The relationship between language and identity is a matter of great interest, particularly within the context of Galician youth, where these two elements are in constant interaction and transformation. This dissertation aims to explore the connection between language and identity in the municipality of O Porriño. To this end, a series of qualitative interviews were conducted over several months with individuals aged 18 to 35. Through the conversations with them, conclusions were drawn that provide relevant and insightful data. This approach offers a closer understanding of the real situation in the municipality and of the significance that this demographic sector attributes to Galician identity.

In some Romance languages, such as American Spanish, there has been a significant advancement in the process of replacing the morphological future (-rei) with the periphrastic construction ir (a) + infinitive for the expression of futurity (Bermúdez, 2016). In Galician, although existing studies (Meier, 1974; Rojo, 1974; López Martínez, 2012) suggest that both forms maintain their prospective value, they also reveal -with certain differences- an increasing use of the analytical future at the expense of the synthetic form. The purpose of this study is to analyse the values and distribution of the morphological future and the periphrastic construction ir + infinitive in a selection of 21st-century narrative texts. In order to identify the factors that may determine the use of each form when they are in alternant situation, their usage is examined based on a selection of variables recognized as relevant in previous research (Bauhr, 1989; Sedano, 1994, 2006; López Martínez, 2012): temporal distance, grammatical person, sentence type, and modality. The data were obtained from the Corpus de Referencia do Galego Actual (CORGA), which allows the automatic retrieval of the forms selected for the study according to established textual typology and chronological period. The aim is to verify whether the expression of futurity in Galician follows the linguistic change trends initiated in other Romance languages, as well as to examine the impact of the variables on the use of each form.

During this period, the publication of literary texts in newspapers and literary magazines flourished in a particular way. It was in this context that many women worked as authors of fiction, translators, and essayists. This period of splendor was followed by one of silence after the Civil War, which caused many of them to fall into oblivion and their names and texts to disappear from the history of literature. The aim of this final degree project is to highlight and recover the literary work of some of these authors by analyzing their contributions to the Lugo newspaper El Regional. Diario de Lugo (1884-1931), specifically in the sections entitled “Con pluma ajena” (With someone else's pen) and “Cuentos propios” (Own stories). Given the length of this work, the review has been limited to the issues from 1930 and 1931. This search will yield a corpus of literary texts that will allow us to delve deeper into the work of authors such as Luisa Camés and Sara Insúa, who already have some critical bibliography. It will also allow us to discover the texts of other writers whose names and works have been lost to oblivion. This study seeks to contribute to the recovery of names and the study of texts by female authors who, despite their relevance at the time, were expelled from literary history.

The amoibaia are dialogues between a character and the chorus or directly between characters, and are intercalated in the play to highlight the ethos in the scene and amplify the feelings in the dialogue, usually in painful and sorrowful scenes. The amoibaia can be divided in two categories; the liric ones are those in which both parts are singed (they have a colorful variety of metres), and the epirrematic ones which are half singed half recitated (usually the recitated part is written in iambic trimeters). The aim of this research work is to analyze the representations of sexual and gender dissidence in a selection of narrative works from Galician literature published from the 1980s to the present day. The study's corpus consists of the novels Amantia by María Xosé Queizán, Herba Moura by Teresa Moure, Pirata by María Reimóndez, and Nom estamos quebrades by Nee Barros. Through a critical and comparative analysis, the study will examine characters, discourses, and conflicts (among other aspects) that shape the various representations of such dissidences in these novels. Thus, it will explore themes such as homosexuality, the subversion of gender roles, bisexuality, and the disruption of gender binarism, among others. Special attention will also be paid to the sociocultural and historical contexts in which these works are situated in order to understand the intersections between literary production and the social dynamics that run through issues of identity, sexuality, and gender. This analysis will be carried out using an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating insights from feminist and queer literary criticism as well as from gender studies. In doing so, the research seeks to highlight the relevance of such works in shaping a plural and inclusive imaginary within Galician literature.

Thus, it will explore themes such as homosexuality, the subversion of gender roles, bisexuality, and the disruption of gender binarism, among others. Special attention will also be paid to the sociocultural and historical contexts in which these works are situated in order to understand the intersections between literary production and the social dynamics that run through issues of identity, sexuality, and gender. This analysis will be carried out using an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating insights from feminist and queer literary criticism as well as from gender studies. In doing so, the research seeks to highlight the relevance of such works in shaping a plural and inclusive imaginary within Galician literature.

Summary
The main purpose of this dissertation is the description of the linguistic features and use of English in advertising. It will be divided into two main parts. In the first part, I will start by defining what is meant by advertising and its role in modern society. I will next deal with its diverse types (online, TV and radio, print, social media, etc.) drawing on their main differences. The next section of this first part will be devoted to the close description of the main linguistic features of this genre where persuasion techniques play a very important role and which include, among others, the use of short sentences, the employment of direct language, wordplays, expressions with double meaning, the search for rhythmic or even musical effects so that the message in question can be more easily remembered by the users. The following section will explore the importance of the context, focusing specifically on the cultural background, as it is evident that advertisements undergo changes based on the country and society for which they are created. I will conclude this first part by considering how the role of the gender factor in advertising has evolved over time. The second part of my research will be more practical and will consist of the application of the main theoretical principles and ideas outlined in the first part to a sample of advertisements extracted from different sources, such as TV and social media. This work will conclude with several reflections derived from the findings of the study. Bibliographical references and webography will follow and, if necessary, appendixes containing some of the advertisements studied will also be attached.

The stories developed in fairy tales testify to the social perception of flaws, virtues and prescribed roles. Yet, traditional fairy tales have systematically portrayed and promoted essentialist views on women’s identity, undermining female agency and their relevance within the community. However, Angela Carter’s The Bloody Chamber (1979) and Emma Donoghue’s Kissing the Witch (1993), among others, pose forward rebellious narratives against traditional patterns by bringing to the fore women’s subjectivity and social empowerment. This dissertation aims to analyse how these narratives both connect with and subvert traditional fairy tales. The portrayal of female relationships, gender roles, sexuality, violence, femininity and power relations in traditional fairy tales has widely contributed to encapsulating women in patterns of subservience, objectification and obedience. This dissertation will explore how topics of this kind have been addressed and retold in Carter and Donoghue’s reassessments to rebel against oppressive hierarchies. For the elaboration of this study, the traditional retellings that comply with patriarchal values will be examined in order to properly explain the evolution of the subversion strategy. To serve this end, this dissertation will be informed by criticism and studies on the development of both traditional fairy tales and their contemporary reassessments for feminist purposes.

This study aims to examine these difficulties, highlighting the differences between the French and Spanish phonetic systems. To achieve this, the study will analyse a number of FLE phonetics manuals. Through a comparative analysis, suitable pedagogical approaches for the specific needs of Spanish speakers will be identified. The objective is to suggest exercises and strategies to help learners overcome the phonetic challenges they encounter. First, we will conduct a theoretical study of the phonetic differences between the two languages, followed by an in-depth comparative analysis of the teaching methods employed. Finally, we will propose a didactic unit incorporating the most effective strategies for improving Spanish speakers' pronunciation in FLE. This will provide teachers with practical tools to enhance their students' phonetic abilities and encourage more fluent and natural oral communication. This research could also lay the groundwork for future studies on teaching phonetics to other groups of non-native French speakers.

This undergraduate thesis (TFG) focuses on the contrastive analysis of the prepositional systems of Galician, Spanish, and Italian, aiming to identify the difficulties that Galician and Spanish-speaking students face when learning Italian as a second language. Prepositions, due to their abstract grammatical nature and variable use across languages, pose a significant challenge for learners. In particular, the study addresses differences in the use of prepositions such as a, de, en, and con in these three languages, highlighting cases where linguistic interference leads to common mistakes. The work follows two main approaches: first, a linguistic analysis of prepositions in these Romance languages; second, a didactic proposal that seeks to offer practical solutions to minimize interference errors. This proposal aims to design specific activities that address prepositional differences at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels to improve accuracy in the use of Italian prepositions. The methodology includes both a theoretical framework based on previous studies on second-language acquisition and a comparative analysis of prepositional use, paying particular attention to differences and similarities that can either facilitate or hinder learning. Finally, the pedagogical implications of the contrastive analysis are highlighted, suggesting that a teaching approach based on comparison can effectively help overcome linguistic barriers.

In this paper, an analysis will be conducted on the importance of non-verbal communication in political debates. In public speaking, most of the weight of communication lies on non-verbal language (Mehrabian, 1972). In a context like political debates, the importance of non-verbal communication is even greater, as it is essential for ensuring that the orally transmitted message resonates with and has an impact on the audience. Gestures, facial expressions, and tone of voice can either reinforce the orally conveyed message or contradict it as Riggio and Feldman (2005) explained. Politicians are instructed in this field from the outset; they are taught to use their bodies as instruments of persuasion to sway the audience in their favour. The objective of this paper will be to analyse how non-verbal communication is used in U.S. presidential debates, and how they influence the audience, focusing on the 2024 Trump vs Harris presidential debate. The paper will be divided into two main parts. In the first part, I will define the concept of non-verbal communication and the different elements that comprise it; and I will undertake a thorough revision on relevant literature on the role of non-verbal communication in American politics throughout history, with particular attention to presidential debates, using sources such as Nonverbal Communication, Mehrabian (1972) or Applications of Nonverbal Communication, Ronald E. Riggio and Robert S. Feldman (2005). The second part will consist in an in-depth analysis of the distinctive non-verbal skills used by both the candidates in the presidential debate between Donal Trump and Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections, where I will apply the methods and concepts presented in the background literature section of the thesis. This will be complemented by an examination of a selection of press articles on the event, published in major American newspapers, The New York Times or The Washington Post, immediately after the debate, focusing the attention on their evaluation and analysis of the candidates’ non-verbal communication style.

The following work will address the underlying factors contributing to the disparities in Spanish dubbing practices for Latin American and peninsular Spanish audiences in audiovisual media. The relevance of this subject in translation studies is marked by the fact that Spanish, as one of the world’s most prevalent languages, demands adaptations that are conscious of the cultural characteristics of its diverse linguistic communities. For this reason, the concept of Neutral Spanish was conceived, a linguistic variant intended to enclose the entirety of Spanish-speaking nations (Ávila, 2011). While this notion gained widespread acceptance in Latin America, it was not embraced in Spain, leading to a bifurcation in dubbing for these two distinct audiences, a phenomenon that this work aims to analyse. The aim of this research is, firstly, to provide a theoretical overview of dubbing in Spanish, and second, to compare excerpts from comedic films, as this genre allows for greater flexibility in dialogue adaptation. The structure is divided into two main sections: the first explores Spanish dubbing theory in depth, covering the history of dubbing in Spain and Latin America, the differences in adaptation techniques used in each region when dubbing from English, and the concept of neutral Spanish. Summary
This work aims to study the linguistic change in the lexicon referring to birds in two generations of the municipality of Carballo, A Coruña. For this purpose, two groups of informants will be selected: a) one with people between 15 and 30 years old; and b) another with individuals over 50 years old. Both groups will be interviewed using photographs and comments of common birds in the area to obtain data. The research seeks to verify the differences in knowledge and naming of birds in the two generations studied. The analysis of data takes into account several factors: age, sex, habitat, studies, etc. The research question from which it starts is: what factours influence most decisively the change and the loss of lexical repertory?

Summary
In his dramatic work, Wajdi Mouawad plays with time and deconstructs temporal linearity to give his narrative a memorial and tragic dimension. This study explores (in the tetralogy Le Sang des Promesses) how Mouawad uses temporal fragmentation to reflect a fragmented memory marked by trauma. By intertwining past, present and future, Mouawad introduces the impossibility for the characters to detach from their past while opening a possibility of reconciliation with their story. This fragmented memory, often marked by trauma, makes the reconstruction of identity difficult and painful. Moreover, the temporal cyclicity puts into tension the fatality and desire for renewal, confronting the protagonists with the eternal return of the past. The incessant return of the past imposes a tragic repetition of events, creating an effect of ineluctability. This time cycle directly influences the dramaturgy, reinforcing the dramatic intensity and symbolic significance of the narratives. In parallel, a gradual acceleration of the dramatic rhythm reinforces the urgency of the narrative and intensifies the dramatic tension. This dramaturgical analysis accompanied by a reflection on the perception of time, highlights how Mouawad makes time a structuring element of his writing, playing a fundamental role in the construction of identity and the expression of tragedy.

Summary
The variety of Galician Spanish, traditionally neglected by Hispanic dialectology, has been a subject of interest in recent years. Works such as Porto Dapena (2001) and Guillermo Rojo (2004), among others, pointed out the influence of Galician in Spanish in Galicia, but even today there are few publications based on representative samples of actual linguistic use. The objective of this TFG is to provide an analysis of new data on a construction that seems to reflect the influence of Galician in Spanish in Galicia. The syntactic structure selected is the combination of the verb tener with a participle, which according to the bibliography shows in the language of Galicia a different functioning than that it has in other varieties of Spanish. The study will use data from the oral corpus ESLORA. The use of corpus data allows for qualitative and quantitative analysis. The analysis will take into account the linguistic characteristics of the constructions (syntactic and semantic) as well as their sociolinguistic distribution. Porto Dapena, Alvaro. 2001. This work aims to study the linguistic variation present in different locations within the Baixo Miño municipalities of Tui and Tomiño, focusing on variables related to seseo. To this end, we will carry out a description and an analysis that will take into account both the frequency of the different variants and the locations studied. Ideally, this will allow us to define, within the studied area, the zones where these variants occur, according to the different distributions considered. In order to carry out this research, we will use a corpus of spoken language, which will be collected through recorded, semi-structured interviews with Galician-speaking individuals from the selected locations who belong to the same age group.
