The Master in Chemistry at the Interface with Biology and Materials Science (ChemBio&Mat) has celebrated the end of the 2022-2023 academic year. The special programme started on monday morning with the presentation of the Introductory Research Projects by ChemBio&Mat students. On this occasion, the multidisciplinarity of the showcased projects must be highlighted, as well as the results achieved in such a short time. Among the topics addressed were the design of new methodologies for the preparation of small rings and nanographenes, the development of artificial metalloenzymes to perform chemical transformations in cells, or the development of hydrogels with antimicrobial applications, a hot topic due to the problems of bacterial resistance: "ChemBio&Mat students are involved in projects at the frontier of knowledge," says Juan R. Granja, coordinator of the programme who emphasises the diversity of the class, where just three of them studied at University of Santiago de Compostela, the others coming from other universities (and countries) attracted by the academic offer. In this regard, it is worth highlighting the commitment of the Vice-chancellor’s office for Degrees and Internationalization through the Learn Africa programme (Fundación Mujeres por África): "Thanks to this programme, two of our students have been awarded scholarships to study the master's programme. Kaddy and Fatima did an excellent job despite the challenges of adapting to a new scientific environment".
The meeting continued on Monday afternoon with a Poster Session where the students presented and discussed the results from their works with other members of the CiQUS community and the guest invited speaker Prof. Carmen Galán. Professor at the School of Chemistry at University of Bristol, Galán offered a closing lecture on glycan-based fluorsecent tools for biomedical applications, sharing the latest advances of her group on this topic and discussing potential applications with the audience. We wish ChemBio&Mat students a good summer and enjoy your loved ones to go back energetically!
